Just started - a couple of questions

I love StarSan, makes my life easier. But I haven't used any other kinds.

    24 hours since pitching yeast...

Having a lower temp, from what I understand, can cause the yeast to get to a slower start. But like it says, it can take up to 72 hours to see anything. Drink a beer, let it ride. :)

Five days in and fermentation is slowing..

Just as a rule of thumb. Once you finish your boil and pitch your yeast, the next three days will have very active fermentation with lots of bubbles, noise, and activity. Then it significantly drops off. Its completely normal. I use a secondary, because I just personally have a hard time...

Does it taste good to you? Or does it taste like it still needs some time?

Help me grow my beer palate

Ever since i started drinking beer I have always stuck with the types of beers I like. Stouts and Porters of all flavors (coffee, chocolate, plain, oatmeal, you name it). I also like beers like Deschutes Dead Guy Ale, and Hopworks Deluxe Organic Ale. As well as most every Red ale I have tried. I...

    Close enough? (FG reading)

Ill give it a taste tomorrow. Fermentation temp is actually lower than I thought, my house stays at about 70 degrees, 67 at night. But the fermentor said it was about 64-67 degrees constantly. I used the Safale S-04 yeast. I re-hydrated but only used one package. Technically, according to Mr...

    Close enough? (FG reading)

Brewing an Imperial Stout from Northern Brewer (extract). Didn't take the OG (but I do partial boils, so I know its not accurate), but the instructions say its around 1.090. Its 12 after brew day and the last three days the FG has been about 1.032. The estimated FG is 1.025. I know fermentation...

To repitch or not to repitch?

I think at this point, revvy has a template for responding to common questions. haha. ;)

Culligan 5gal water jug for carboy?

If you can, go bigger. I brewed an Imperial Stout in my 5gal carboy (5gal batch) and I lost about a half gallon of beer from fermentation.

What should my next purchase be?

I think i'll be sticking with 5gal batches for the next year at least. When I go to 10 gal I want to do All-grain. So i'll be saving over the next year for that. The price I found was a 7.5gal Stainless pot and burner combo on amazon. I will always buy stainless. Reading here has convinced me of...

What should my next purchase be?

Whats a good place to get a bigger pot? Just a brief look for everything I could spend $120 on a pot, $100 on a fryer. It adds up fast. But maybe I'm looking at the wrong place for a pot. Nevermind, I found a combo Turkey Fryer/7.5 gal stockpot on ebay for $99.

What should my next purchase be?

What website has the $60 combo? I can't find anything that affordable in my searches

What should my next purchase be?

I haven't looked into a Mash Tun, so I'm not really sure what it is.

What should my next purchase be?

Here is a detail of my equipment and setup. I have some extra money and want to know what I should "upgrade" or buy to enhance the brewing experience. Extract Brewing currently: -20 QT stockpot (stainless) -Auto-Siphon -8Gal Bottle Bucket -Two plastic carboys -Entire Keg System (don't...

    Krausen/Fermenting Concerns

Its not enough air to make it bad. Just don't sample the beer about 5 times a day ;)

    Krausen/Fermenting Concerns

It sounds like everything that should happen is happening. Let us know how it tastes!

Forgot to take an FG, bottled at 1.030

Do you use any brew software? What does it say your FG should be? I'd put them in a tub or bag and prepare for potential bottle bombs. But let it go and see what happens after a few weeks.

How long to wait to use Wyeast?

I found this website through this forum: Mrmalty.com Its a great resource to know what kind of yeast you'll need. WHile you don't "need" a starter, its always good practice to do it. It lets you see that the yeast is active and healthy, as well as creating enough to make your brew. But the...

    Stout looks like an amber

I see you are in Hillsboro. Where do you go for your LHBS? Try F.H. Steinbart. Great store, however, its in east Portland.
