The Brew House kits- anyone used them?

Hey, that is very encouraging. Thanks for the tips. Considering that the LHBS is closed here today (Sunday) and I don't have any hops I think I will go ahead and dry hop later instead. Exactly the kind of reply I was hoping for. Thanks FlyGuy.

The Brew House kits- anyone used them?

Well, my first brew (a Cooper's Lager kit) is now chillin' in the secondary. I call this my "Aleger" since it's a Lager kit made with Cooper's Ale yeast. We'll see how it turns out. Went from 1.042 to 1.005 at racking, and tastes like flat, warm beer...so I consider that a good sign. Next...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Looks decent...very low shipping too! I'll keep it in mind for the future, but when I arrived home today I found a big envelope pack in my mailbox. Inside were 10 Red Star packs of Montrachet! Wow...way more than I needed. Anyone in the London area want a few packs? Thank you Red Star!

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Thanks, Benner. Mr_Moe also just wrote me to tell me of a place nearby him (~1.5hrs from me) that has it. So that's a possibility too. Actually, I have to say this: I wrote the makers of Red Star to ask where I could pick up some Montrachet, as I wasn't finding it anywhere. The North...

    ground cinamon in apfelwein?

Yeah, I put some ground cinnamon into my 1 gallon jug last night. I know it won't totally settle out, but hopefully after a few months (and with some careful racking) I can minimize it. I didn't have any sticks, but had just bought a fresh bottle of ground last week. I'm not worried about...

How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

Interesting, I had that one and the EC-1118 but (last night) chose the EC-1118 instead. Let us know how the k1-v116 turns out. 2399 + 2 = 2401

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Ok then, my first dip into brewing Apfelwein... Actually, only my second brew ever (still working on a kit in the primary). Despite everyone's warnings, I decided to take it easy to start. Made 2 X 1 gallon jugs, with a bit left over, based on EdWort's recipe: 8L Allen's AJ 400g Dextrose...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Grrr...with all the buzz around this Apfelwein I'm excited to try it out....but I can't find Montrachet yeast anywhere around here! Buying online just for that would be ridiculous considering shipping. :(

    Extract kits of ebay

Bandit. Brewhaven seems to have lots of stuff. Hops, DME, LME (in big barrels), kits, equipment. I've been in 2 times and they have always stressed that they can get things in too, given a week or so. I picked up a photocopy of their supplies, but forgot to bring it into work to scan for...

Sugar for fermentation - quick question

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm having a lot of fun with it either way it turns out. I kinda cheated last night (it was getting late) and since I didn't realise that my kit was for 23L, and I only had a 23L carboy I filled it up to about 21L. After work today I came home to lots of foam...

    Lessons Learned on First Batch

Too funny. I'm in the same boat. Started my first batch last night, and now I'm left going...now what?! I want to do another one, but I'll have a hard enough time making my way through 23L! Or else I (or my wife) will worry about my sudden increase in beer swilling. I was thinking about...

Sugar for fermentation - quick question

I remember seeing somewhere that you use more DME than you would cane sugar...but I can't seem to pull up the ratio....darn it! Can anyone be kind enough to remind me? The kit suggests one kg sugar...so I would add ~1.5kg DME?? Something like that? EDIT: OK, never mind. I got 500g of light...

Sugar for fermentation - quick question

Ah, do I take it when he says "I would not use any sugar" what Josh means is simple sugars...as opposed to DME (malt sugars)...or does you both mean add no sugar at all (not cane/corn/malt sugar) other than the extract from the can? Sorry, now I'm a bit confused. BTW, I don't actually think my...

    Ale to Lager

I was just listening to a podcast from Basic Brewing Radio (01-19-2006) featuring John Palmer where they talk in depth about lagering. It sounds like low temps is important right from the start...not to mention a whole different strain of yeast...

Sugar for fermentation - quick question

Really, you wouldn't add any sugars to the fermentation? Wouldn't this make a really, really light beer? Will using the lager yeast at higher temps produce a bad product? True, I guess it is worth the extra couple of bucks..even if it's just a kit and my first time... my Uncle brews Cooper's...

Sugar for fermentation - quick question

Well, I thought the temp around here (southern Ontario) was getting down...but it looks like we'll be back up to around 30C sometime this week (~85F)...so I was going to keep it in the basement with ice packs. Not that I was particularly concerned about producing a "lager" per se, as much as...

Sugar for fermentation - quick question

I know this is talked about elsewhere, esp. ie. How to Brew...but I was wondering if I could just get a couple of QUICK opinions. This will be my first brew ever, and I have decided just to try a Cooper's Original Lager kit to start (I think I'll quickly move on from there after this first...

    Extract kits of ebay

Thought I'd post some links I've dug up from Canadian suppliers not mentioned here...as much to put them someplace as anything. http://www.canadianhomebrewing.ca/shop/index.php http://www.wineandbeerfactory.com/ http://www.skinaneybrewing.com/ http://www.wortmonger.ca/index.php...

    Extract kits of ebay

Boo. Looks like Paddock Wood's future is dim. Too bad for us. I'm in London, and just preparing to start my first brew. I've been reading up extensively, and am about to go and get some basic equipment. Bandit, any tips on the best HBS in the area? This is a great site...so much good info...
