Schmorgesborg of questions from Newbie starting up

You cold attempt pasteurizing. Can't recall exact location, but there is a thread on doing it. I believe it is in the cider forum. Basically, you bottle just before your target gravity, and let it continue fermenting in the bottle for a short time to get it carbonated. Then you submerge the...

I have 10lbs of honey. Simple recipe?

10 lbs is enough to make a 5 gallon batch. Your ABV just isn't going to be as high. I started a 10 lb batch a couple of weeks ago and my starting gravity was 1.082. If this ferments to 1.000, that would give an abv of 10.75%. A 4-8 week turnaround is possible, but generally speaking, not very...

    Another campden question

I believe that you will have to re-dose it. Campden dissipates in 24 hours or less. This is why you can use it to sanitize must and still add yeast 24 hours later without killing it.

Newbie Question About Sanitation of Must

I use heat while preparing my must, not to sanitize it, but to aid in getting the honey dissolved. I boil 1 1/2 gallons of water, add another 1/2 gallon of cold tap water to bring the water below boiling, add my honey and nutrients, and then top off to 5 gallons with more tap water. (Volumes...

    Goose Island BC prices

Drinking a Bourbon County right now, and $10 is what I paid. In my opinion, well worth the price. My #1 beer at the moment. Reminds me of a chocolate Riesen (spelling?) candy. Phenomenal beer and wish I could find them regularly.

    Honey, Maple, and Honey-Maple Mead??

I made a 14% maple wine back in April of '14 that I had completely forgotten about until I read this post. Shortly after bottling, it was pretty good, but with a little bit of alcohol burn. I'm chilling a bottle of it now. Will post tasting notes in a few when I crack it. Hoping that it has aged...

New brewer adding extras to extract kit

I'm in the camp that says experiment away. I rarely brew a batch exactly the way it's recipe calls for. I would suggest you use a light flavored honey though, something like clover or orange blossom. Darker, more flavorful honeys may dominate the flavor profile in a wheat beer. The clover honey...

    Barleywine with spruce tips

I've tried a pine ale before, Alba Scots Pine Ale, and while it was interesting, it wasn't something I would drink a lot of. You may want to split your batch and see if its something you would like. As far as how much pine, no clue...

    Keezer in a closet build

The chessboard pub table is complete. It is 2'x2' with a 20"x20" playing area. The chessmen are aluminum and were made in 1962 according to the date stamped in the bottom. Now I just need to make/find some large checkers. Contemplating taking a large wooden closet rod and taking 1/2" to 3/4"...

Straight Pole Trellis System using tree and a post

^ they are called turnbuckles. As far as what type of line, I would suggest the plastic coated cable commonly used for dog runs. Mason's line will not stand up to the elements and wouldn't be good for supporting weight or tension.

    Keezer in a closet build

It's a lot of work, but I have enjoyed doing it. It has taken about three months to get it to this point. I didn't detail it in the main body of my post, but I did some remodeling on the room as well. There was some ugly sky blue carpet in there that I ripped up and replaced with hardwood...

    Keezer in a closet build

Ya. The fridge is great. I was going to use the regular fridge I was using for the kegs to hold bottles, but when I saw this one, I had to jump on it. Now the old fridge is going to be used for cold crashing and storing hops, malt and yeast. Also just finished hanging a dartboard in a cabinet I...

    Keezer in a closet build

It sits just to the right side of the closet. I have been making some modifications to it. I unhooked the interior lights and tinted it with some 5% film to protect the beer from light. The lightning bubble has been set to sound activated mode. I also replaced the Sobe logo with a custom picture.

    Keezer in a closet build

The 6 free tap handles that were given to me when I bought the cooler. Bar top epoxy poured and cured. It took 3 coats due to bubbling issues. Apparently oak's coarse grain traps air and releases it when it is epoxied. I used heat to pop as many as I could during curing. After it set up, I...

    Keezer in a closet build

I recently finished my keezer build. I waited until it was finished to post my build thread because I hate when I am left hanging for the next update. This is the freezer I used as a base, a GE 7.0ft. It is sitting in it's eventual home, a shallow closet in the room I plan to convert to a home...

    Epoxy woes

I applied another coat last night, and I think it turned out well. There are some tiny flaws caused by the bubbles in the first coat, but overall, I am happy with the results.

    Epoxy woes

I hope so. Not only is oak expensive, but I have a lot of work in on it and it was looking great before the epoxy.
