    My custom beer caps.

    40W CO2 laser.

    My custom beer caps.

I am not sure what wattage is required, but I am using a 40W CO2 laser, running at about 10mA. I don't see why a diode laser couldn't do this though. It just has to be able to vaporize the paint off the surface. It might take multiple passes though. I will be able to test this next week, as...

    My custom beer caps.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I have finished my jig and can now do 50 caps at a time. Only thing left is to figure out what to brew next.

POLL: How Many refrigerators do you own?

I have 4. One for food, one for cold crashing beer and storing ingredients and yeast, an old Sobe commercial cooler for bottled beer, and a chest freezer for kegs under my bar tops.

    My custom beer caps.

A couple months ago I bought a laser engraver and have been tinkering with it for a while. A few days ago, an idea struck me. Why not use my laser to vaporize the paint off a bottle cap to make them into custom labels. This is the result of my first batch of caps. I had to make these one at a...

    Game of Thrones

Once again, Samwell gets the inside scoop on knowledge. He didn't catch on, but key plot point in the interaction between him and Gilly in their room. She comments on Rhaegar's annulment with his wife and marrying in secret in Dorne. I think this secret marriage was to Leihanna (Jon's mother)...

    Fabulous Drunk Food - Pictures!!!!

Had a great meal at The Belgium Comes To Cooperstown beer festival at brewery Ommegang this weekend. The theme this year was The Big Top and the different courses were inspired by sideshow acts and pared with a different beer. I didn't get a shot of the dessert because by the time it was...

    Game of Thrones

I am wondering if he will see some magical tomes. His comment in season one about wanting to be a wizard now seems like foreshadowing.

    Game of Thrones

Anyone else pick up on what is happening with Samwell and the maester in Oldtown? After curing Jorah, he seems a little pleased that Sam succeeded, but because of his position, he can't come right out and reward him. So, he gives Sam access to tons of old knowledge under the guise of making new...

A little bit of black particals in wine

Could the particles you are seeing be coming from your water? I have a well as my water source and frequently see sediment from my well show up in the bottom of my brew pot. They settle out very quickly and I do not find them to be something to worry about.

    Weed infused honey in mead?

Another thought about the process. It may be a good idea to add the hash to a couple ounces of a neutral liquor like vodka or everclear to dissolve it. That way you can keep any solids from making it into your must.

    Weed infused honey in mead?

It is true that THC is soluble in fat. It is also soluble in alcohol. I would suggest that if you attempt this, ferment out a fairly high gravity brew with a lot of flavor, something like a dubbel or stout with a lot of roasted grains. Dry hop with a golden hash rather than the whole flower...

New Joke thread. Let's keep it reasonable

It's the night of the big ball. Cinderella wants to go but is stuck at home with her period. She asks her fairy godmother for help. "There is one thin I can do to help. I can turn this pumpkin into a magic tampon that will stop all the symptoms, but you have to be home before midnight to remove...

    Pool pump for CIP?

One thing to consider... CIP is a pretty harsh chemical. You may want to see if the parts on your pump can handle exposure to it. I know it will eat and tarnish softer metals like aluminum or brass, and it makes some plastics brittle.

    Brewery Stickers, Kegerator Project

Beer festivals are also a great place to get brewery swag. I have a box full of stickers, coasters, and bottle openers from places all over the country.

Schmorgesborg of questions from Newbie starting up

For my cleaning, I use PBW cleaner, available in most brew shops and online. I believe it functions similar to the oxyclean. For lightly soiled stuff I use a 5 min soak, and for heavily soiled stuff like the primary fermenter, 20 mins. (Mead fermentations are usually fairly clean and don't leave...

Schmorgesborg of questions from Newbie starting up

Yep. The first one is the one I use. The valve I was referring to is found on a thief like this. There is a plastic flapper valve in the bottom that acts as a one way valve. Adding flavors to your brew is an art, and there is no one correct way to do it. I know you are on a budget, but when...

Schmorgesborg of questions from Newbie starting up

I like my glass thief. I cannot recall what brand it is, but I picked it up at a local home brew shop. It is simply a tube of glass with a narrow opening on one end, and a larger opening on the other. Works well and easy to clean/sanitize. The plastic ones with the self closing valve on the...

Schmorgesborg of questions from Newbie starting up

Hence, the warning at the end of the post. But, yes, probably not something that should be attempted without an extreme amount of caution.
