I like this time at night on HBT

This isn't related to the current topic, and I've been sipping rum for the last hour (store bought) and I have a variation on yooper's welch's grape juice wine recipe bubbling away. It's fizzing like a freshly cracked soda... I'm new to home brew, but does anyone else just sit and watch the...

    Bray's One Month Mead

Microbiology? I don't understand. *smashes small rock with big rock* I think I'll stick with the 1 year plan on the champagne yeast for the friends, and do 1 gallon with S-33 on the side, bottle it like beer, and do monthly tasting, at the end of that, the simple mead of the champagne group...

    Bray's One Month Mead

I know, I know, changing the recipe voids the warranty. That being said has anyone tried this with S-33? It's the Belgian dry yeast right? I would, of course, make a starter for it, feed it, water it, take it for a walk... Ok maybe not a walk. My concern is that my wife has celiac, which...

Need help getting Started! GF Ground 0

I'm in Maryland, and I shop at Annapolis Home Brew. (www.annapolishomebrew.com) They do Internet orders and are good with advice. But I hope you can find something within a reasonable driving distance, it helps to have "quick" access to stuff. By quick I mean not mail order. AHB is still an...

Need help getting Started! GF Ground 0

Chris, I believe you meant John Palmer. But that's not my point. The book is available online at www.howtobrew.com. Seems like OP is in the same spot I was in about 3 months ago. As my starting point I got a starting kit from my LHBS, and a Brewer's Best GF Ale kit. It is quite similar to...

Pappy`s Pub Cider - Award Winner!

I also price checked my LHBS, I'll be darned if they aren't the SAME glass jugs as the juice. And with the price difference, I'm getting a gallon of juice for 60 cents!

    Welch's Grape Juice Wine

Ok. My version is in primary. No PE, no yeast nutrient (pitched whole envelope). And no acid addition. Let's see what happens. OG is 1.086

    I am an idiot

I love that "making room" and a low bottle inventory is a sellable excuse. Cheers!

The Reason I Haven't Been Posting Much...

Is Maryland one of those states? If not I'll nag the local booze store to start carrying it. All they have in GF is green's blonde singles or cider. Which is why I started exploring home brew in the first place.

    Welch's Grape Juice Wine

716 posts... 48 pages... *pant* I have added this to my to-do list, but I can not leave well enough alone, I am adjusting the recipe a smidge. The local organic market does not sell concentrate, but does sell juice from concentrate... I digress. My recipe: 1 gallon yield 64oz concord grape...

    GF Maple Bourbon Amber

In my wife's research, (she has celiac) maltodextrin is sourced from either corn or wheat but usually from corn in home brew products. It is the maltodextrin that you'd find in packaged/processed foods that are wheat based. I double checked as I wrote this, my LHBS sells malto from LD Carlson...

    Bare bones cider series

Darn my eagerness... Took detour to work, stopped by LHBS and got stuff for next batch. And made a mess, but that has never stopped me before. Started with a gallon of the McCutcheon's unfiltered apple juice (sold in glass gallon jugs) Poured off what I guessed to be enough space for a pound...

Pappy`s Pub Cider - Award Winner!

I threw together a variation on this tonight. Used 1 gallon of McCutcheon's unfiltered apple juice (OG 1.044) poured it into a stock pot. Added what I guess to be a little over 2# of domino light brown sugar (repurposed from wife's cookie making stockpile) boiled it down to the 1 gallon mark...

    Bare bones cider series

I'll do what I can, temperature-wise. The room itself is typically around 60* I closed the heating register and keep the door closed to keep cats out. But I don't have a specific fridge for fermenting. Yet... I also forgot to grab strip thermometers at LHBS, and didn't feel like paying $2 more...

    Bare bones cider series

Next group of 3 will probably involve a beer yeast. I am going to stick with dry yeasts on account of the gluten free. My wife has celiac, I have become rather sensitive to it, so that's that. I understand a lot of cider makers seem to like Nottingham, so that will be one of them... And in...

    Bare bones cider series

Home brewing is about experimentation right? Good, glad you're coming with me. I have a series of ciders in progress. Very basic. In hindsight, perhaps too basic. Here's what's up so far. Bare bones cider 1: 1gal McCutcheons unfiltered apple juice. 1packet red star champagne yeast Did I...
