    Pipe smoking, a lost art.

Welp, the Frank method is a smashing success. Sitting on my patio puffing away as I type. Nothing fancy, just some Walgreens Vanilla Tobacco. I need to get myself some good stuff and see what I'm missing. In general, what are people's opinions on the loose jars of tobacco seen in cigar/pipe...

any way to "adjust" your palate?

I was in the same boat for a while. Switched to APAs, and then had my first milk stout. Big stout guy now...

    Going to Chicago

Babies would also be fine in either Goose Island brewpub. They serve a bunch of beers on tap you can only get in the brewpubs, and operate independently of ABInBev. If you go to the one on Clybourn make sure you go around the corner to Franks n Dawgs

Bananas Foster Creamy Ale (All Grain) **pic intensive**

I though buckets for secondary could lead to oxidation because of head space? Although as I type it I realized that he started fermenting again in "secondary" because of the bananas... So that would probably push the O2 out.

    Pipe smoking, a lost art.

Got both of mine from www.pipesandcigars.com. Very happy with the pipes and the service, prices were very good. Local shop had the Savenilli for almost double the price.

    Pipe smoking, a lost art.

Here are my two: The churchwarden is a Savinelli, and the other one is a Kaywoodie. Took that picture with the stem removed to show the metal "stinger" on the inside. Apparently a lot of people remove that but I don't mind it. Like I said I'm new to this so when I do gurgle the stinger keeps...

Bananas Foster Creamy Ale (All Grain) **pic intensive**

Planning on doing this soon, quick question for everyone. Assuming I shoot for 5g post boil, can I get away with a 5g better bottle for secondary? If not...is 6 ok? I'd prefer not to drop the cash on the glass, plus the safety risks of glass make me nervous. Thanks!

    Pipe smoking, a lost art.

I've seen that and tried it but I guess I don't understand. Wouldn't packing hard on the top layer compress everything underneath?

    Pipe smoking, a lost art.

Got into pipe smoking a year or so ago (25yrs) because cigars make me nauseous but I do enjoy the camaraderie of a good smoking session from time to time. Good buddy also got into pipes but he has since moved away. Got a nice, relatively cheap Savinelli churchwarden and a 25 dollar Kaywoodie...

    In Chicago right now...

If you end up closer to the Near North/Mag Mile neighborhood check out a speakeasy style bar called the Watershed. It's inside in the basement of a champagne bar called Pops. They specialize in local beers and spirits. Really cool place.

    Cheap Kegs ?

For what it's worth, I find you really get what you pay for with kegs. By the time I factor in shipping I can usually get kegs from my local shop for 10 bucks more but I can look at them, inspect them, and get troubleshooting and return them should I need to.

    White house beer

(x ounces)*(y alpha Acid%) = 10. So if your bittering hop had an alpha acid value of 10%, you'd use 1 oz.

Bottling bucket as a second primary?

I do it all the time, just be sure to really clean that spigot afterwards.

All-Grain to Extract Conversion help (Goose Island Green Line Clone)

It would change the flavor a bit S Simcoe has a distinct flavor IMO but I don't think it would be bad. My last beer was not quite bitter enough for my tastes so I'm going to increase the IBUs a bit, probably by slightly increasing each hop addition equally to not throw off flavors.

All-Grain to Extract Conversion help (Goose Island Green Line Clone)

Liberty first sorry... The Green Line description online has the hops jn a different order than the official recipe they gave someone here.

    Cheap DIY Tap Handles

I think I'm going to do this and seal the tunes with silicon caulk or even a cotton ball so the grains don't come out when I swap them...way easier than the way I've been it.

    Crap. Broke my siphon...now what?

Put one end of the hose in your beer. Jam the narrow end of a turkey baster in to the other end of the hose and such on the large end of the turkey baster. Once you have beer through about half the hose put the end of the hose in your destination vessel and let it flow.

    Worst brewday ever!!

Homebrew and I had our first fight the other week and had to take some time apart to think about things. Glad to hear it happens to the best of us, although not glad that you had to go through all that!
