    Longevity of uncrushed specialty grains

Hi HBT. I have seen similar posts to this, but they have usually concerned longevity of base malt. I am in a situation where I have some uncrushed specialty grains (crystal, chocolate, black patent) left from my last batch which I brewed a little over a year ago. I am about to order some...

American Pale Ale with Galaxy not tasting as expected

Hi Soviet. Sorry, about the missing information. It tastes a bit alcoholic which puzzles me a bit since the room it was fermenting is was generally around 20 celcius (68 F). It doesn't really have alot of depth but just comes on as quite heavy (malty with quite some bitterness from the hops)...

Making a cider with base malt for sweetness

Thanks for the replies. I have read about Graff on here before, but never connected the dots :smack:! Will probably try a modified version of Brandon's. Thanks again!

American Pale Ale with Galaxy not tasting as expected

Hi HBT. A while ago I brewed an APA with galaxy hops. I was quite excited when I ordered the hops for the batch, since I read on BYO that it had the following profile: "When used as a late addition or dry hopped, it contributes a pungent flavor of passionfruit and citrus." So I thought...

Making a cider with base malt for sweetness

Hi HBT. I've been wanting to make a cider for a while and today an idea struck me. Iøve been reading up on making cider with ale yeast (the only yeast I've currently got in stock is S-04 and US-05) , and a common problem seemed to be that when using an ale yeast such as S-04 and US-05, the...

Using crystal 30L for american styled porter?

So I should just use 30L as normal (8% of the grist in this case) and then maybe a tiny bit of black patent for color adjustment (I like dark porters)?

Using crystal 30L for american styled porter?

Hi guys. I'm doing a clean-up brew and I have Maris Otter, crystal 30L, chocolate malt available to me. I want to brew an american styled porter, but I am unsure whether crystal 30L will give it enough character, compared to 60L. Should I simply use more than when using 60L? Or will the 30L be...

I missed my O.G.. Compensate with sugar?

Hi HBTers. I brewed an all-grain APA today, a recipe I've done before. I did it just as before, but for some reason I missed my O.G. I was supposed to get 1.053 but I got 1.044. Is this "missed by alot"? Anyway, I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to dissolve some table sugar in a...

    Adding carapils for lacing

Does the torrified wheat give any clarity issues with your brew?

    Adding carapils for lacing

Thanks for the mashing temperature tip. I usually mash at around 154, maybe I should try out the 156-158 range for improving lacing / body.

Thanks. I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

Will my SMaSH / APA become too bitter?

Here's an update. I ended up brewing the recipe I originally posted with the 60 minute addition moved to 45 as BeerLoverHere suggested, and using Safale US-05. Here is a pic: It's not too bitter, just perfect for me, and the head seems quite good. Very refreshing beer with citrus aroma. No...

    Adding carapils for lacing

Hi. I recently brewed a recipe I came up with (this is my recipe but I moved the 60 minute addition to 45: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/will-my-smash-apa-become-too-bitter-454609/). It was basically just a SMaSH with Maris Otter and Centennial (@45, 10, 5 , 3, 0) and it turned out quite...

Thanks for the reply! Definitely some important points (especially about the dark APA thing). I will try reformulating and posting the recipe in this thread for feedback.
