    Racking To Secondary Question

sounds good. I'll do 3 weeks at 70 then move them to the fridge. I'll try one 2 days later and see what its like. If I feel it should be more carbed I'll wait another week and try again..... Lather rinse repeat.

Chilling the wort. A few questions.

I boiled it in water and then cleaned it with the PBW cleaning stuff that I bought with my kit pieces... And then left it soaking in sanitizer until it went into the wort.

    Racking To Secondary Question

I dont have a patience problem. I just dont want to mess things up. I'm great at following directions. Problem is, in all my research I found old directions in the form of brand new books. (new on shelves anyway) Now I have $65 in carboys I dont need... Grrr.... Minimally a month you say...

    Racking To Secondary Question

So. As of last night my first batch is in the primary. What do you recommend I do with it? You mentioned reinventing the wheel, the lack of need to do so. I couldnt agree more. How long should I leave it in there before taking my first hydrometer reading? 2 weeks? A month? Its an...

    Racking To Secondary Question

I'm sure this is why 70% of these conversations take place. You have newbies, some who take the time to read up on things in 2 purchased books, and lots of web time, note taking, checklist making, etc. Still not doing things the way you guys currently are. This is why I ask questions. I...

    Racking To Secondary Question

yeah, this "false info" that can be read in recommended books and sources cited by more than a few people can really be frustrating can't it?

    Racking To Secondary Question

is there an advantage of leaving the beer in the fermenter longer than 2 weeks of the gravity has stabilized? 1 week in primary, 1 week in secondary is my plan. I'll take readings on each of the last 3 days of week 2. If its stabilized I'll bottle it. (14 days since the boil) I've seen...

great tips. Thanks! (Fragility... I hear ya. I keep being very careful, while reminding myself that hundreds of years ago this was done right by the river with next to nothing...)

    Racking To Secondary Question

great advice, thanks again Revvy. This of course brings up an important question... How to I take hydrometer readings with a sealed up fermenter bucket I am not supposed to open?

Question about pouring the wort into the fermenter

great, thanks!!! This time I just dumped it right in. Next time I was planning on going back and forth a few times and thru a sanitized strainer each time for max aeration.

    Racking To Secondary Question

what the book I'm reading says is 1-5 bubbles per minute max on the airlock means primary fermentation is completed. Would you agree?

Chilling the wort. A few questions.

The book I have (How to Brew, by Palmer) says that ideally the wort should be cooled to the temp it will ferment at. (65-75 degrees Farenheit) In you guys history, is this possible using a garden hose and copper tubing submersion wort chiller? And while using the wort chiller, as it seems its...

Question about pouring the wort into the fermenter

I did my first batch last night and a question came up today... When pouring the wort into the fermenter, how critical is it to strain out anything in the bottom of the kettle? Assuming you used a muslin bag for steeping the grains and just tossed the 2 portions of hops right into the wort.
