Anyone still milling grain with a hand crank???

I've been using the crank for 20+ batches now... after my brew session today I'm thinking of making a trip to harbor freight tomorrow. Not sure I want to punish my cordless drill. Worst part is that my arms haven't gotten any bigger :(

Best metal screw for drip tray.

I would use some 3M adhesive Velcro strips. Easy to remove for cleaning and no damage to the fridge. If you were to screw it, then sheet metal screws would work fine.

    Quick fermentation

Did you open the fermenter at all since you last saw activity? If you're using the airlock to judge fermentation, then a small air leak in the vessel can make it seem like it's stopped. A hydrometer is the only way to really know.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Just finished brewing up a batch of Pilsner, one of the beers I always keep on tap. Made a 5.5 gallon batch and filled up the 5 gallon carboy instead of my 6 gallon... found out that a 5 gallon carboy will perfectly fit 5.5 gallons :smh:

    Flavoring Stout at Bottling

I’ve added vanilla extract and even pieces of hot peppers to my bottles. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work with other flavorings, especially if you make a tincture with some vodka. As for amounts, I recommend pulling a sample before bottling and add your flavoring in small amounts to find the...

    Flavoring Stout at Bottling

I do that all the time. It's a great way to experiment without ruining an entire batch.

I'm a noob with general questions. Also, ready for a habanero beer!

Tough part would be getting it out afterwards!

I'm a noob with general questions. Also, ready for a habanero beer!

I've used habenaro and scotch bonnet peppers in my beers. Every time I've done it I just freeze the peppers in a vacuum seal bag and then add them straight to the bottle or keg. I've added as much as a quarter of a scotch bonnet to a 12oz bottle and really enjoyed it. I've added 4 scotch bonnets...

    Ferm chamber setup

I use a 8 watt reptile heating pad that I just stuck to an old pizza stone that had broke (to act as a heat sink). When making Saisons, I have no problem getting into the upper 80's in my 5.2 cu.ft. chest freezer. I use a little usb computer fan as well...

For those who dry hop in the keg,,,

I use this method and it works great. http://scottjanish.com/my-favorite-way-to-dry-hop-loose-in-primary-and-kegs/

    Dumb mistake

I'm sure it's fine. I would be amazed if that caused an infection, especially if fermentation started in a timely manner.

Any outdoor brewers attract honeybees when brewing?

I sometimes have honeybees around my kettle during the late summer/early fall. I've had a few batches where they actually ended up in the wort and sometimes don't find them until bottling/kegging time. :( Never hurt the beer though.

Ever Ferment A Beetle? I did...

I've found a bee when discarding my yeast after bottling. The bees will sometimes fly right into my boiling wort in the fall... Beer was perfectly fine.

Any All Grain Kitchen brewers out there

In the winter time I'll make my batches in the kitchen. I just wrap the pot with reflectix to help with retaining heat in the mash and boil. It may not boil as vigorous as with my outdoor propane burner but I've never had an issue reaching my numbers. Making a mess shouldn't be much of an issue...

Note for Beginners: First, brew something you know what it should taste like.

Great advice. I've been brewing for a little over a year and a half now but I started out making a lot of recipes without knowing what they would taste like once finished. Sticking with clone beers for your first few attempts is a great way to understand what malts/hops you may enjoy. I've been...

    Culling "Friends"

I'm more upset by my friends/family not pouring my beer properly from the bottle. They often turn the bottles over, which mixes the yeast back into the beer, or they pour the yeast into their glass... if they use a glass. I've stopped expecting clean bottles, if I get them back.

    accurate brewing thermometers

I've been using the CDN thermometer for a year and a half now. It's been working great for me. A couple brew days ago I dropped the thing in my hot mash and was certain I'd be buying a new one. Nope, it came out of the mash, I rinsed it off, and it just looked cleaner. :ban:
