Does it take longer to carbonate 22oz bottles VS 12oz bottles?

It seems far more plausible to me that the yeast release CO2 directly into solution in the beer, and the waiting period is just the 3-4 weeks it takes to generate a sufficient volume of CO2 to carbonate the beer. I have a very difficult time imagining a mechanism by which yeast could release...

Does it take longer to carbonate 22oz bottles VS 12oz bottles?

I know this has been covered before multiple times, but I can't resist... CO2 does not "go into" the headspace and then "back into" the beer. The partial pressures of the CO2 in the beer and in the headspace are always in equilibrium. As the yeast create CO2 the pressure in the bottle...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

I'm not sure if this applies to you or not wegz15, but I had an issue with mine where I actually had my drive magnets TOO close to the top of the box. Mine worked with bolts/solid carbide cutting tools/paperclips, pretty much anything; but only when I put in a 1/2" to 5/8" spacer on top of my...

    Sanitizing Bottles

Mine does, but it gives me the warm fuzzies to know that my star-san solution is strong enough. Plus you can make a star-san beard.

Can anyone recommend a good style for Easter?

You could go for a maibock, that's a little lighter, but a good spring style. You're pushing it on time though for that one.

    Sanitizing Bottles

I'd think you would need to be super careful about making sure that all the bleach is thoroughly rinsed. If you don't want to rinse, why don't you use a no-rinse sanitizer like Iodophor or Star-San?

Herpedy-Derpedy, I wonder what this yeast starter tastes like...

I made my first yeast starter last week for a maibock I brewed on Sunday. After I pitched there was about 1/4 teaspoon of sludge left on the bottom of the growler I made the starter in. It smelled like sulfur, but I said "Hmm... I wonder what this tastes like." It wasn't bad, but all of a...

First lager, first yeast starter, usual confusion

So, I just built the DIY stir-plate from Anthony_Lopez's thread (thanks again Anthony), and I'm planning to use it for the first time in advance of this weekend's brew session. I'm making Northern Brewer's Maibock kit, and using the recommended Wyeast 2124 Bohemian Lager smack pack. My...

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

Thanks a ton Anthony, I built this in my spare time over the last couple of weeks. It was a wicked fun project, as I've been wanting to start learning a little bit about electricity (I'm a mechanical guy) and I was able to do an "electronics" project related to beer! Total cost was $20-$25 (I...

    attenuation ?

I like to use these calculators, especially since they are embedded within a very well-written explanation of what attenuation is and how it is calculated.

    Don't Fear the Foam??

Try the March 29, 2007 episode of Basic Brewing Radio, it's a great interview with the creator of Star San.

    Don't Fear the Foam??

I only get a little foam when spraying out of a bottle, but I always find that I can create it pretty easily just by stirring/splashing with fingers or a spoon. Try shaking your spray bottle, mine always instantly fills with foam when I shake it. Also, when I'm using a vinator to sanitize...

Please critique/advise me on my technique

Hey, another n00b here, so take my advice with a grain of salt. It seems to me like people are split on the carboy as primary thing, try them both and do what you like. I'd second the advice about reading Revvy's bottling thread, having a bucket with a spigot is awesome. The way I do my wort...

    fitup basement for brewing

I'm not trying to be a jerk and argue with you (and further hijack Mr. Shakes-Beer's thread) since I did ask the question. I thought the answer had merit... so I checked the relative molecular weights. CO2 = 44.01 CO = 28.01 average molecular weight of all air components: 28.97 That...

    fitup basement for brewing

A related question, which should hopefully also help answer the OP... If I use natural gas for my kitchen stove, shouldn't I be able to use the same natural gas safely in a basement (with the proper burner and with the hookup done by a licensed professional)?

My stout stopped at 1.030, what should I do?

In case anyone else has an issue with this recipe in the future, I found a version of it on beertools.com which lists the OG at 1.068. They used 0.7lb more malt extract and a couple ounces less grain, but my guess is that the OG should be pretty similar. It really isn't far from my 1.072...

My stout stopped at 1.030, what should I do?

Thanks for the tips guys, I appreciate it. SwampassJ, The hydrometer checks out perfectly, that's the first thing I checked. I thought the same thing, how did I mess up an extract OG? This is one of my first batches that used real grains though, so I'm not sure how much the "mash" of the...

My stout stopped at 1.030, what should I do?

For my second batch I decided to make the "Toad Spit Stout" from Papazian. Something seemed a little off right from the beginning, because I followed the recipe exactly and the OG was 1.072, way over the 1.054 recipe target. I pitched 2 packets of safbrew s-33, at 70-75F, however I may still...
