    too much evaporation

Get a good boil going, then after the break settles turn your flame down to maintain a rolling boil.I start with 7.25 gallons and boil off about 1 gallon an hour.I also lose about 3/4 gallon to trube and end up with 5.5-5.25 gallons every time.Hope this helps.:mug...

Vorlauf question - runnings won't clear?

I have the same setup that you have and found that the pie plate w/holes works fairly well, but it still takes 2+ gallons to clear.I think part of the problem is grain is getting under the false bottom by stirring the mash.I hard piped my false bottom to the valve and that helped, but didn't...

    Leaky flip-tops

Are your fliptops plastic? If so,that is most likely the cause of the leak.File or sand the seam from the mold flat and smooth to make a better seal.I had the same thing happen to my beer with fliptops. Some would carb fine and some would not. After sanding the plastic tops smooth they all carb...

    Safe temperature range?

I built a son of fermentation chiller and it works great. I built mine to hold two carboys side by side. I ferment my ales at 64 deg. and once the beer stableizes at this temp the fan hardly runs. I switch frozen water bottles every other day and there's still ice in the bottles that I pull out...

    water volume question re: PM

Check your boil off rate with water first. Last weekend I started with 6.5 gal. and ended up with 4.75 gal. for a 1hr. boil. It was windy and cold so my boil off rate changed. It would be wise to test with water first to give you an idea of your boil off rate.

    Yeast Cake ?

I have a SNPA clone in the primary fermenting with Wyeast 1056.:ban: SWMBO wants an American wheat beer. My question is would it be OK to rack the wheat onto this yeast cake? Thanks for your suggestions !
