    yeast harvesting

I have a few yeast related questions. I want to get into harvesting yeast from my 5 gallon batches and I have watched many videos on how to do so. Usually, they split up the slurry into 4 or 5 smaller mason jars and I was curious how to figure out how much slurry you would need for a starter for...

Fermentation can take 24 to 72 hrs to show visible signs.

That is a good point, I will let it ferment out so i can taste the differences in both of them. Thank you once again for your great help.

Thank you for the detailed response. This was my first lager and I have learned a lot from what you said. There is no activity in the airlock with the liquid yeast used, if it stays that way can I assume that the smack pack was too old? Or because of the low cell count, it won't cause the air...

Fermentation can take 24 to 72 hrs to show visible signs.

Yes, I made a 5 gallon batch and split it up. I did not rehydrate the dry yeast. The instructions just said to pitch them and that batch is fermenting. The snack pack did not have a starter. I just popped the pack inside of it and let it sit at room temperature for 3 hours and it didn't swell...

When should you start to worry? I made a lager Sunday with a 1.034 og and used an American lager wyeast smack pack and haven't seen any activity. Should I repitch? I did a 5 gallon batch and split it up and used saflager 34/70 and that started fermenting he next day.

http://traffic.libsyn.com/basicbrewing/bbv02-28-14speedbrewing.mp4 Those two guys are great. You can learn a lot from them. They have an example of making a "smash" extract ipa and I don't see why you couldn't apply their recipe to a 5 gallon batch, unless you want a small batch. Imho this is...

    SHaME beer recipe

I realized today that I never updated this thread. I drank all six beers not long after they were bottled. I took pictures of what the ale looked like but unfortunately my computer isn't working at the moment to grab them. The ale tasted a little watery I'm terms of its body, but i enjoyed it. I...

    15 min boil cream ale

I wanted to purchase a cream ale kit but only wanted to make a 1 gallon batch because I can never seem to make a batch of beer my girlfriend likes. So I figured why not make a cream ale. I looked at some recipes and kits and quite a few only called for light dme. I had some light dme on hand and...

Has anyone tried adding cinnamon to their batches?

    Graff (Malty, slightly hopped cider)

@redzeker I did prime and I used 5 oz of corn sugar. I didn't see the notification, that's why I took forever to respond. I tasted a bottle after a week and it had a sweet taste to it which wasn't overpowering. Now it's turned to a more tart taste, has anyone else had a similar experience?

Just tasted my graff. After a week of bottle conditioning and 3 hours in the fridge, it tasted amazing. I'm very happy I brewed this.

Boiling canned pumpkin or using it in the mash

Okay, I will do a mini mash for this batch with the 6-row malt like you suggested. Will 2lbs be enough? I am going to add it and not substitute any for the extract, why not add a little kick to it haha. What do you mean by adding the canned pumpkin to hot liquor water? Thanks.

Boiling canned pumpkin or using it in the mash

I'm curious , what's the best way to use canned pumpkin when brewing an extract pumpkin ale ? I'm using the Pocahontas pumpkin pleaser recipe. I read that boiling will cause haze and possibly an infection.

    5 star pbw question.

I have a bunch of bottles that need to be cleaned, my question is how long can I use a 5 gallon buckets worth of 5 star pbw if I soak the bottles in it to clean and get the labels off of the bottles.
