    My Hefeweizen tastes bad

Its definitely an "off" taste at this point. I have had many different ones before. One of my favorite beers is a Weizen at my local brew pub. Bananas and cloves taste is waht I enjoy about that beer. Hopefully it is something that just needs to mellow out in the bottle more. This being my first...

    My Hefeweizen tastes bad

Memorial day weekend I brewed my Hanks Hefeweizen from MW. I let it go three weeks in the primary. It has been close to three weeks now in the bottle and it doesn't taste much different than my test bottle did after 5 days. Sort of a sour taste.:( I do get a little pop when I open it so there is...

    Cleaning out bottles

I do like the idea of using a clear (Corona, New Castle) bottle to watch the beer after bottling. You pick up good tips in here!

    Cleaning out bottles

But as long as they are visibly clean (no yeast, dirt, etc) won't a quick rinse along with sanitizing be enough?

    Cleaning out bottles

As far as CLEANING bottles go. Is there really a reason to clean them out. I understand you definitely want to rinse ot the yeast cake (which I do before it has dried up). But if the bottle looks clean I am wondering if I need to worry about it. Obviously labels are a different thing. I am...

    I need a second primary...

I can clearly see I will be needing a second primary to keep the pipeline going. I know an ale pail does the job just fine, but it sure would be nice to at least SEE the beer progress. Question is: What size carboy would be best for an all around primary? By "all around" I mean one that work...

Maybe you drive her to drink and this way she will have a constant supply! :rockin:

Should a take a gravity check

Waiting it will be then, at least a couple more weeks. Should I not even bother taking a reading until then? I am seeing I will need to buy a second primary to keep the pipeline going! Like I have read in here before...the hardest thing is the patience part!

Should a take a gravity check

Midwest Superior Strong Ale has been in primary (bucket) for 1 week now. Instructions say to transfer to carboy after 5-7 days. I have not taken a second gravity reading yet (the SG was 1.061 or so). My first beer I did not use a secondary (it was a Hefeweizen), but I would like to clear this...

Did I do a bad thing??

Thanks for the speedy responses. I was sweting that one out.:D

Did I do a bad thing??

Just finished brewing my second batch (Strong Ale from MW). When I tranferred the wort into the fermentor I strained out the hops that were in the boil. I also realized I did this for my first batch (Hefeweizen) which is bottled now for almost a week. Were these hops suppose to have went into...

    Mw Hefeweizen

Alright, My first batch (Hank's Hefeweizen from MW) has been in the bottle since Monday (after 3 weeks in primary, no secondary). Decided to try a bottle last night, chilled it gave it a taste. YUCK...bitter and bad. I expected it to be somewhat flat, although I did get a nice little pffft when...

    Muntons Yeast

I have been reading that many have problems with this yeast. The Amarillo Pale Ale I just ordered from Midwest will be arriving shortly with this yeast. I am thinking I may pick up some Safale from my local HB store. Is there a problem with putting the Muntons in along with the Safale (in other...

SWMBO says I MUST brew in shed, too hot???

Sounds like a man cave is in order here. Seriously just do the boil in the garage. If she doesn,t want it fermenting in the house tell her tough ****, or just bring it in and don't tell her. Just put it in the basement with a sheet over it. She wil never know it's there (that is unless there is...

    Brewed My First Batch Yesterday...

I just used a cheap instant read meat thermometer and it seemed to work fine. I just kept a close eye on it for steeping to not let it get too high. Granted you have to dip it in there a few times, but it really is not a big deal.

    First batch update

I may look into the kegging thing, but being a newbie and this my first batch I will just go with the bottling for now. So you are thinking just skip the secondary? I have heard a lot of people say they don't even mess with using a secondary. I guess with this being a weizen it will be sort of...

    First batch update

Okay my Hefeweizen is now 5 days in primary. I have taken 2 gravity readings (yesterday and today) from the sattelite beer I made after pitching. The SG was 1.050, the reading the last 2 days is 1.012. Airlock is showing a bubble about every 30 seconds or so. When do you folks think I should...

    Panicky newbie...

Thanks for the responses. One thing I did do was remove the paper towel from around the tube at the neck of the growler. It was holding air in. Made a nice little pffffffft sound when I removed it. Now ther air has an escape. Good to see it bubblin!

    Panicky newbie...

Okay, I got my first batch in the fermenter (6.5G bucket) yesterday. Chose to go without an overflow. Came home from work today and this stuff is bubbling like crazy about 24 hrs in (It is a Hefeweizen/WL300 yeast starter/SG 1.050). It is bubbling like once per second, maybe even more than that...
