    Starter or no starter

Chimone, I have a boat that requires that I should always use 89 octane. I could just believe the manual, but I find that I know more about my boat and how to take care of the engine if I know why exactly the reason for using 89. It burns hotter, ignites under higher pressure, thus...

    Starter or no starter

That's great, but why exactly do you believe that?

    Starter or no starter

I hear many people talking about making starters for their 5 gallon brew, even though they may start with a smack pack or White Labs vial. Unless you have a high gravity beer or suspect that your yeast is not healthy(long shipping time, exposed to high temps, etc), why would most bother with a...

    Airlock bubbling over

I just checked on my brew which is about 48 hours into fermentation in a 6.5 gallon plastic fermentor. The airlock has filled with sediment and is slightly bubbling over. Right now, the airlock looks to be filled with more wort than water. I guess I could somehow rig a blow off tube. My...

Rochefort 10 or St Bernardus Abt extract clone?

I'm dying to find a good Rochefort 10/St. Bernardus/or simiar extract clone. I know that this might be hard to do with extract, but I'm willing to give it a try. I also found a Chimay Grand Reserve clone, but it's all grain. Can anyone accurately convert this to extract? Grain Bill 13.33...

Belgian Dark Strong Ale Easy Chimay Blue clone

I second that. I'm really interested in finding a good Chimay Blue clone, but have not heard anything from people that have tried it. I guess it might take about six months to age though.

Sediment in wort during cool down

I had only .25 oz for the whole boil, then .5 oz for the last two mins. Not a very hoppy beer at all.

    Much higher gravity that expected

It was a partial boil, about 2.5 gals. I did take the measurement after topping off, mixing, and at 70*F. Couple of other things... I had a pretty significant cold break and had lots of sediment in the wort at the time of the original measurement. I took one about ten minutes later and it...

Sediment in wort during cool down

Yes, I topped off to five gallons. Weird thing is, I took my first measurement less than five minutes after I topped off, and got my reading at 1.082. Then I took one about ten minutes later and it had dropped to 1.070. Do you suppose that the cold break sediment/coagulation that was still...

Sediment in wort during cool down

So I just took a gravity measurement from this same batch, and it came up at 1.082. Much higher than the recipe expected at 1.048. What the heck could I have done wrong? It called for 1.5 lbs of DME to be boiled for 60 mins, then 4 lbs of DME to be added late addition for the last 15 mins...

    Much higher gravity that expected

So I just took a gravity measurement from an all extract beer that used 5.5 lbs of DME and one pound of steeping grains. It came up at 1.082. I was shooting for 1.048 from the recipe. What the heck??? Now I'm not sure that I have enough yeast to pitch. Even if I did, this would be one wierd...

Sediment in wort during cool down

I just brewed a batch of wheat beer using 1.5 lbs of wheat DME for 60 min boil, then added 4 lbs of light DME late addition for the last 15 minutes. During the cool down using icewater in the sink, I am already seeing sediment in the wort separating. This is only my third batch, but I did not...

    Yeast washing

I saw the thread on here about yeast washing recently. Does anyone have lots of experience doing this? What are the chances that it may become infected with wild yeast or other issues? It looks like a good way to save money, but not if it ruins a batch of beer.

    Used Bottle cleaning help...

I heard of running them through the dishwasher WITHOUT detergent, and on the heat dry cycle will clean and sanitize them. The heat is what does the sanitizing. The person I heard it from said he had been doing it for a long time without a single problem, but i've never tried it myself.

Color affected by malt extract type?

Is it possible to achieve a nice light yellow color in a beer using LME? I have now brewed two batches. The first was from a kit and supposed to to be a wheat beer. It used light steeping grains and 6.6 lbs of Briess Wheat LME. The beer is good, but not a wheat. It's considerably dark in...

    Where to find Safale US-56/US-05

From what I hear, US 56 is now US 05. Anyone know where a cheap place to get this online?? I keep hearing of dry yeast under a dollar, but the cheapest I can find is almost two dollars.

I Suck At Labels And Desperately Need Help

Check out My Own Labels | Custom Labels, Personalized Favor Tags, Coasters, Bookplates, Note Cards, Place Cards. I'm not sure if they can put pictures on them but you can create your own name along with other cool stuff. If noting else, you can get some ideas for a base design.

    Dead Yeast?

I brewed and bottled my second batch of beer. I used a clone recipe from BYO magazine(recipe follows), which used a liquid yeast WLP029. I bottled a week ago, and it has been at 70 degrees since. So far, I have almost no carbonation, and the yeast has settled. When I roll the bottles to mix up...
