Imperial Wheat Brew Day with photos

Hey... Today I tried out my new all grain setup. It is a make shift HERMS setup as I recently added a pump, hoses, and a new 15 gallon boil kettle (the old boil kettle became the HLT 8 gallon). So the idea behind the recipe was an Imperial Wheat (i.e. pale ale with a little wheat and a lot...

    Water: Filter or RO?

As with everyone thus far, I recommend the RO system if you can afford it. If you cannot afford it, see if you can borrow someone's (friend, family, etc.) filter and see if that gives you the water quality that you want. If you don't have one you can borrow, ask a neighbor if they have filter...

Yes, please post your entire process. Bullets, or at least skipping a line inbetween steps would be nice.

    Can someone explain "efficiency"?

I am glad that you supported John, however you could have googled "How To Brew." I do not own the actual book to tell if there is any differences, but the website has lots of great info. http://www.howtobrew.com/intro.html

    Imperial brown ale PM recipe??

I am not sure where you are in the country, but one amazingly good hopped amber is Ale Asylum's Ambergeddon. It is simply delicious. Ale Asylum is from Madison, WI. My next project is to attempt to clone it. When I find a recipe that works, I will PM you it.

    Lowes Buckets

Hey, my advice is before you go to your local home brew shop or Lowe's, check craigslist. 3 days ago I bought three 6.5 gallon buckets with sealing lids from a guy that had given up home brewing for $8 each. For sake of argument, my local home brew shop (Northern Brewer in St. Paul, MN) sells...

    How low will it go?

I don't have specific experience with that yeast, however I typically wait at least 10 days before racking to secondary and longer if needed. Since I use secondary I tend to base when I rack more on the Krauzen before checking a gravity reading. If the Krauzen is down and your gravity is 1.015...

First AG bottled and priming now. Questions about possible problems.

Were the oranges and corriander in the boil? In microbiology we grew some pretty wicked looking cultures from coriander straight out of the jar, and beer is the perfect batch culture. Also how many did you drink, I might be seriously sick if I had more than 2-3 beers that heavy.

NB 5 gallon cooler mash tun - plastic smell?

My coleman cooler did too before my first mash. I heated water to about 180 F and poured it in. The plastic smell grew significantly, however I tasted the water afterword and no plastic taste. Taste is key, not the scent. The smell was replaced by the smell of mash after the first time I used it...

Thanks for the responses thus far. Here is a rough photo of what I am seeing. It is a larger, green looking organism that is swimming.

    Yeast starter Problem

Hey everyone I have 3 extract kit batches of beer under my belt, but tomorrow I am planning on brewing a 5 gallon Bock extract kit that recommended a yeast starter. So today I made the yeast starter in the method described below. I cleaned, then sanitized (using Starsan) my Erlenmeyer flask...
