    bitter pre-pitch wort...

Ahh I've been meaning to pick that up since my last trip to Barnes & Noble had a line @ the register that I didn't feel like waiting on.

    Moving the secondary 10 miles

How long was it in the primary and how long has it been in the secondary? Is it premature to bottle it now and move with it in bottles?

    First 5 gal brew tonight

I ordered this in the mini-mash kit the other day and was about to brew it today but realized I hadn't bought canned pumpkin yet!!! I'm going to the supermarket tomorrow to pick some up. Today I brewed a mini-mash AHS Special Seasonal Ale and it's currently cooling and smelling amazing! God I...

which website has the cheapest star san?

Do you guys mix Star San with water and keep it in a bucket or something? I've been going through this stuff like water! I just filled a spray bottle but I didn't use distilled water, just regular tap water with Star San. Right now I've got about 2 gallons of water/Star San in a primary...

    Bottling Day!

Aside from making sure to do the priming properly, one piece of advice I want to give you is take a 6-pack worth of your bottles, put them in a cool dark place to save for around 6 months. You will thank me later! Thursday night I had a 16oz bottle of an Irish Stout I brewed somewhere around...

    Wort/Beer in Airlock?

One thing you'll want to switch (unless this was already stated) is going to vodka in the airlock. I've got a little bottle of the cheapest vodka the liquor store had and use that instead of water. I have an Oktoberfest in the primary right now and after 1 day of fermentation, the airlock was...

    My first mini-mash

JLem that sums it up perfectly. Sometimes you just need to hear something two different ways to understand. I'm almost done brewing my AHS Seasonal Holiday Ale and everything worked out pretty well. I needed the wife's hands for a minute while using the strainer to sparge but all is well...

    My first mini-mash

Anybody have any suggestions? Do I follow the instructions that came with the mini-mash & when I'm done, top the fermenter off with the cooled pre-boiled water?

Refermenting? I'm not sure what to think.

Weird fermentation recently. I've got two extracts in primaries side-by-side and they both had great fermentation for 2 days, then completely stopped. One had a vigorous enough fermentation that for the first time, I needed a blow off tube. 7/22 I pitched yeast to both right after the other...

    Just tried my first batch

Congrats, always an awesome feeling of accomplishment popping that first bottle! Now you just need to make sure you don't run out EVER! I've been out of homebrew for weeks between work & my wedding... I just brewed up two batches and have three waiting to brew. Can't way for winter!

    My first mini-mash

Jlem the oven idea is awesome & I'll definitely use that. I did not end up brewing yesterday so hopefully I'll be able to do it today. Grinder, good call on the second pot. I think my confusion comes from water amounts. I'm used boiling up 2 or 3 gallons and letting it cool, putting that in...

    My first mini-mash

Yes, the strainer is too small for the pot but I'll see what I can do as although it's not necessary, it does seem to make sense. So instead of occasionally turning the burner on during the mash, you stick it in the oven @ 200 (why not 160) for the 45 minutes? *edit - thanks for the quick...

    My first mini-mash

Hey guys, I decided to take the next step after 3 extract batches (very successful) and move onto a mini-mash. It's a AHS Special Holiday Ale My question is in the instructions (I know I know they're more like guidelines) it reads: (after putting all the grains in the grain bag) Soak the...

First Glass of my Home Brew...

My wife loves Magners and a few of the commercial beers I like have pop tops so I accumulate bottles quite rapidly. I will admit, I'm a bit cheap when it comes to bottles. I went on Ebay and bout tons of the old Grolsch bottles with ceramic tops (rather than the newer style plastic bottles)...

    Question about moving to secondary

I'm very new at this but from what I've read, many people don't even use a secondary. My last batch I kept in the primary for 6 weeks, racked to the bottling bucket and left it to settle for a day or two then racked to bottles.
