    Vanilla Beans

Actually since it's an approximate number of beans (about 30) but the weight (113 gm) seems to be the common ground, it would be easier to split by weight. :).. sorta.

    Vanilla Beans

Scott, I want to split it up. Obviously the larger the order the cheaper it becomes overall. If I need to order 1/4 lb (30 or so beans) and split it.. fine by me :) I can make due with 15.. heck I could make do with 7 !

    Vanilla Beans

I'm thinking of ordering 1/4lb or so of bourbon vanilla beans. (30 or so beans). Would any of you local texas folk be interested in splitting an order? Here's the link: http://stores.ebay.com/The-Organic-Vanilla-Bean-Company_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQdptZ0QQftidZ2QQpZ2QQtZkm A lot of folk on...

    Out of control foam!!!!!

If you dont ever want to deal with blowoff again you can add foam control to your beer once it hits the fermentor. Works great from what I hear. Oddly enough out of 8 batches I've brewed I've never had to use a blowoff tube..

    Propane Burners

A lot of folks like the bayou classic http://www.bayouclassicdepot.com/product_310_detailed.htm That one, in particular. It's a ring burner as opposed to the jet burners. A number of members on other forums state it's great and can stabilly hold a keggle (15.5 gallon keg converted to a...

    AHB Value line

If you call them they'll gladly fax/email you a recipe of any of their kits. They are my LHBS.. but I've never picked out one of their 'value line' kits.

    My first Mead

First of all, I'd suggest picking up ken schramm's "The Compleat Meadmaker". That's a great start. Meads don't seem terribly complex to make.. they just take forever to age (as you know).

    what water?

Medicinal These flavors are often described as mediciney, Band-Aid™ like, or can be spicy like cloves. The cause are various phenols which are initially produced by the yeast. Chlorophenols result from the reaction of chlorine-based sanitizers (bleach) with phenol compounds and have very low...

    Starter kit glass or plastic

I hear this excuse time and time again. What makes scratching plastic so bad? How is one's plastic pale ruined with scratches? When sanitizing, the liquid sanitizer surely can get into those scratches at the molecular level.. so it's a moot point. Can those places harbor bacteria? Sure...

    First Cider

hey falafel ;) So the cider is under way.... starting to bubble a bit thanks to nottingham! I forgot to take a gravity reading, but it seems most ciders fall between 1.040-1.050(ish).. so I don't think I'll concern myself with it.

chill and decant a big starter?

Actually decanting a starter is a great idea. But you want to toss your starter in the fridge the night before you use it so all the yeast drop out of suspension. Decanting while they are active just dumps active yeast down the drain. I always decant most of the liquids off my starter, but...

    Best Brew Pot?

El Pisterio, You can get ball valves and whatnot at your local LHBS for less than sabco sells for. But to be honest, all and all I spent about 100 on my keggle. That was a weldless fitting, ball valve.. bazooka screen and the keg itself... I had to do the work myself, cutting the top out...

    A few newbie Questions

    1) UV light is what skunks beer, bulbs in your house should not produce UV. 2) You want to ferment your beer at the range your particular yeast uses. most ale yeast are between 62 and 70. 3) why would you remove them once chilled? 4) if you are carbonating with priming sugar for bottling...

    Starter kit glass or plastic

I love my glass carboys but am scared I'll break them (If you search other forums you'll see horrendous stories). If I were starting out and couldn't afford conicals I'd suggest better bottles. They're plastic PET bottles (sort of like ozarka bottles) but less oxygen permeable. Don't...
