    Does efficiency also mean quality?

I get my grains from austinhomebrew (LHBS) but I crack them myself. My efficiency has gone up since I started doing that.

    The case for protein rests

I didn't see anyone really touch this issue but protein rests are (IMHO) pretty much a thing of the past. Today's modified malts (with the exception of wheat and a few others) do not require the rests that are outlined above. I know I've read this in a number of places.. I just can't seem to...

    Does efficiency also mean quality?

There are quite a few experienced batch spargers that consistently get in the high 70 to mid 80 % efficiencies. So, in a word. Yes.

Fermenting on a previous yeast cake..

First time I've done this. I racked my APA to my primary fermenter which I had just racked my second hand at a fat tire clone out of. Had a nice fatty layer of yeast at the bottom. Racking the new wort in made for nice swirling action to roust the yeast back into suspension. I had activity...

    WTF is that stank?

I've done that once as well. Never again. ARGH

    Does efficiency also mean quality?

Why? Any particular reasoning? I Dough in, let my mash sit for an hour to 90 minutes and stir every now and then. Then I add my 190 degree water (2gallons usually) to get the grainbed into the 160s. Let that sit 10 mins, I then stir right before I start to recirc. I then recirc until I get...

    Recirculating..

I used foil for the first time this weekend. It worked pretty well. Next time I'll poke holes in the foil. The wort wanted to flow out one direction more than the other.. while this wasn't a big deal.. it would be nice to have it sort of 'uniformly' redistribute itself.

    Does efficiency also mean quality?

Scaling up all the malts can be a pain. Especially the specialty malts. You end up with oddball weights. Just bump your base grains up, I say. Unless there is a HUGE jump in the weight I wouldn't concern myself with upping the specialty grains. Just IMHO.

Is constantly adjusting the CO2 gauge normal?

The pressure will not re-equalize instantly. Set it for your serving PSI, watch what it goes down to (say 9 psi). Come back in a bit and it should be back at your serving psi. Also remember if the regulator is in the fridge, there seems to be some slowness to how the CO2 gauge reacts (both up...

    Plastic carboy?

Most kits use plastic buckets. The only thing I can think of is the better-bottle.com plastic PET carboys. Are those the ones? Most likely not if the kits are 'super cheap' (The plastic better-bottles are as much as glass carboys). The big thing with plastic is it's O2 permeability (how much...

    First Cider

Added my Sparkalloid Hot Mix on Sunday, I think it was. Maybe saturday. Cider is certainly getting clearer day by day. It was quite a surprise to see the difference overnight, though. Humogous.

    FoodSavers (Vacuum) are on sale...

Nope, didnt wash the ceramic container. Just wiped it out with a dry paper towel and added my DME. I've now got a nice brick of DME in there, when I want to use some for a starter I sort of chizel away at it until I have enough. Effing sucks. I should just put it in the sink and let it all...

    FoodSavers (Vacuum) are on sale...

DME would worry me, since you are vacuum sealing it.. I'd think that dme would get sucked into the vacuum chamber. Not good. It would be nice though, I had DME in one of those flour containers (that has a gasket on the lid).. and it turned rock hard anyway! :(
