How to clean a carboy????? HELP

I use PBW or Oxyclean, fill it half way up with HOT water. I got a screw-on cap for my 6.5 gallon carboy (the neck is threaded).. and I leave it upside down overnight.. by morning the ring of kreusen is gone. I leave the keg right side up to clean any smeg off the bottom, dump it all out and...

    Cost of a brew.

Drew, All grain is usually quite a bit cheaper than extract or partial mashing. That's where you see these sub 20 costs, or near 20 costs. Other factors are bulk grain purchases, bulk hop purchases (7bucks/lb vs. 1.25-1.50 an ounce at the LHBS), re-using yeast.. etc. I'm on batch #9...

    Cider Recipe, I need help

You'd be better off using pure cider with no preservatives. Or atleast check that your concentrate isn't preserved by potassium sorbate or other means. You'll have a heck of a time getting a ferment going with a preservative in the fermenter. Also be aware most ciders take considerable time...

    Best Brew Pot?

Stainless cleans easier, but of course is heavier. if I were to start from scratch again I'd pick up a used commercial keg, lop the top off and put a ball valve on it (like I have now) rather than messing with a 'normal' brew pot.

    Brewing mead or "honey beer"

Mead is a honey wine, certainly not a beer. Keep in mind, boiling honey will take out a lot of the aroma and flavor compounds. If you are truly interseted in making a mead I suggest you pick up Ken Schramm's "The Compleat Mead maker" (yes that's how the title is spelt). Meads are going to...

Finally kicked my apricot ale from Feb

I realise what step mashes do, however most grains are fully modified now that those lower end mashes aren't needed. That's why a lot of folks hit for 150-160 and don't bother with the 130s. I know what 167 does too, but he talks about raising the temp and THEN sparging. He makes no...

    Storing Wort....good idea?

There are a number of folks who store sterile wort (boiled, in a sanitized container) for easy yeast innoculation later. It's not a bad practice at all.. as long as your sanitation is good.

    Is re-using yeast safe?

I haven't done any yeast saving for myself yet, but the general consensus from the vast reading on the subject suggests not saving the yeast from the secondary.. for a number of reasons which include: fatigue, mutations and possible contamination from racking to secondary. Most folks I've...

    Star-San vs. Iodophor - FIGHT!

Hrm my post disappeared... or something. I use 1/2 - 1 gallon of diluted star san in my carboy, i just swirl it around until i get all the surface wet.. give it a minute dump it out and drain my kettle into it. never been a problem, produces so little foam it's no worries. I've used...

    Star-San vs. Iodophor - FIGHT!

I dont see why everyone hates the foam, it's just foamy star-san bubbles. I rack on top of them all the time.. If you let the foam settle out you'll find less than a tablespoon of star-san liquid remains, which would not impact taste at all. I've got a 32 oz thing of Iodophor that I'm using...

    Star-San vs. Iodophor - FIGHT!

    1) I can smell Iodophor at a rate of 2 caps (1/2oz) per 5 gallons (12.5ppm). 1 cap for 4g puts you under 12.5ppm.. so I dont see how you use it as an effective sanitizer.. that is unless you aren't using BTF Iodophor (other products may have a different amount per gallon) 2) Who wants to...
