    Weird yeast washing experience

Granted this was my first try at it. Here's the problem... I had the yeast in two mason jars. They started to separate like it shows in the stickie... However when I went to go open them to pour off the top solution into smaller jars... They "boiled up" and all of the yeast remixed so I'm...

Any home brew clubs in the Ft. Lauderdale/Pompano Area?

Not many... There were three of us there. It was productive though, we had some discussion on kegging and hop utilization. It has started though... There is a pompano beach brew club now. The name is yet to be decided, and a permanent meeting time is still in flux (a Saturday time was...

    CO2 fill?

Hey Florida brewers, So I just got a kegging system (seriously, it arrived 20 minutes ago via UPS) And its got a nice and shiny new 5# CO2 tank. Does anyone know where around the Pompano area I can get it filled? I'd prefer not to swap it out if possible.. Thanks in advance.

So I think we can make it happen. I never heard back from John at the buddah, but as small as this club currently is, I don't really think we need permission. Eddie... I have been to Big Bear a couple of times. Beer is really good. I'm a big fan of their Brown Bear Ale. If you go...

    Question about Beersmith instructions

What Sherpa said.. Your initial strike water is 4.75 gallons. Mash with that for however long. Then add the .33 gallons @168 for 10 minutes, drain.. then add the 3.36 gallons @168 for 10 minutes, drain... Combining them and cutting it in half would be a good option as well since...

    Question about Beersmith instructions

Yes. I think it all comes down to how much time you want to spend and if that time is productive. Doing one big sparge still works. I just know on my system, I went from high 60's low 70's from one big sparge to pretty constantly mid to upper 70's with two. Just think of when you wash...

    Question about Beersmith instructions

I don't look at it as two sparges... It's a single sparge in two parts. Only doing one part has the potential to leave more residual sugars behind. Those sugars get cleaned up with the second part

    Unusually low efficiency

So I pulled a sample and its reading 1.037 at 66 degrees I pitched Sunday however and it was going strong Monday morning. So its had a good 36 hours of fermenting. Are they any charts or anything that can show what nominal SG would be at that time?

I'll check when I get home tonight and report back.

    Question about Beersmith instructions

One theory is that by sparging twice you are making sure you are getting all sugars from the grain. Think of it like washing soap from a glass. Fill up soapy glass and empty it out the first time (Mash) ad a little water and swirl it around to get remaining soap (1st sparge) and then fill...

    Unusually low efficiency

My final volume is ~5.5 gallons. No lid and a strong rolling boil.. not a simmer. The more I am thinking about it the more I think I diluted my post boil sample with star san. :o It's really the only thing that makes any sense.

    Unusually low efficiency

No, You are correct... I definitely have something screwy going on here. that is for sure as I calculated the same thing. I'm wondering if its something as simple as a diluted refractometer sample. I sprayed my wine thief with star san and took a very small sample of wort for my post boil...
