Small gift for a home brewer?

+1 on the joint brewing session - he'll get more enjoyment from the fact that you want to learn the process than he would drinking a beer you bought for him. So pick a style that you both really like and you'll get plenty of recipe suggestions here, or order a kit from a reputable shop like...

Infection in Bucket - Throw Away Bucket?

Yeah I'd make it a new cleaning bucket. Rather buy a new bucket than lose a batch of beer.

    Converting Extract Recipes to Partial/AG

BeerSmith is also helpful in adjusting the hop additions to reach your target IBU when converting from partial boil to full boil. First enter the recipe as written, with the given boil volume, and note the IBUs. Then increase the volume to full boil and back off the bittering hops until your...

    What the hell's an IPA?

Congrats - your life truly begins today!

On Mr Malty, yeast washing, and slurry thickness

+1 for using as much of the slurry as needed, without washing. Since these yeast are coming straight out of one beer and going into another there's no need to wake them up or even refrigerate them. Also, check out the recent Brew Strong episode on repitching yeast (Brew Strong - Repitching...

    Help with this recipe/schedule

The excessive bitterness in your first batch may have been the "extract twang" some people notice in their first few partial-boil batches. This seems to be caused by very high concentration extract boiled too vigorously, which can scorch or caramelize some of the sugars. For your next batch...

Here's the bar top, fits snugly on the freezer and has a hinged lid.

    looking for camping recipes

Earlier this year I took my cast iron dutch oven and a pork shoulder roast on a camping trip. The night before we left, I seared all sides of the roast then rubbed with vinegar and a homemade dry rub. Saturday morning I put the dutch oven on the campfire with the roast, drippings from searing...

Four more and this would be in drunk ramblings

I can't wait to crack open one of the Kona Longboard Lagers I picked up yesterday... if only home weren't so far from work!

So I'm looking for a dog....

My wife and I got a Treeing Walker Coonhound from the Wilson County Humane Society a few years ago. She really wanted a dog but I was nervous about a puppy or anything too energetic, but growing up in the country I've always loved hounds. When we saw him we both knew he was perfect. He was...

    SWMBO Made Me Do It!

The beer I have waiting is a blonde ale that has been aging in the carboy for about a month now. It may have passed its prime already, and I really wanted to have a pint or 4 this weekend as I'm brewing. I got everything for $300, which was basically what I paid for a CO2 tank, regulator...

    SWMBO Made Me Do It!

Turns out my Ranco temp controller doesn't work either... I plugged a lamp into it Monday evening, set to 50dF in a 70dF room and the lamp came on, so I changed it to 75dF to confirm that it would turn off. It did so but displayed "E2" instead of the room temp. After changing the temp setting...

    NC Brews

The Triangle area has quite a few micro-breweries now but I think most of them only distribute locally. Some well distributed NC brewery names to look for are Big Boss, Cottonwood, Highland, French Broad, and Duck Rabbit (especially if you like dark beers). Anything you find from those...

That does look like the perfect tool, and much easier than using traditional wrenches or changing sockets frequently. Thanks!

    Unintentional Spontaneous Fermentation

Yeah, experiment! I didn't completely screw up an eagerly awaited batch of pale ale! :drunk:

    SWMBO Made Me Do It!

Upon closer inspection, it seems I have no gas lines and the CO2 manifold does not have check valves. And the stainless taps do not have shanks, they're connected directly to the quick disconnects. But the freezer and Ranco controller seem to work fine, so I've already gotten my money's worth...

    Unintentional Spontaneous Fermentation

Madness indeed! Have you ever actually wanted to drink the resulting concoction?

    SWMBO Made Me Do It!

The guy I got it from said someone owed him some money and gave him the setup instead. I suspect they kept the nicest pieces as the bar top is conspicuously missing 4 taps and 2 dual-tap drip trays. So hopefully this was someone's leftovers and all the stars aligned to bring it to me for a song...
