    Wine finings in beer?

I recently did a batch of skeeter pee and have a bunch of the finings left over. They made the skeeter pee really clear and I was wondering if there was any ill effect if you used them on beer as opposed to cold crashing. I used kmeta and sorbate. I'm also guessing that it would eliminate the...

    Source for all stainless filter?

If you have a marine supply near you, we use stainless steel strainers on board ships for straining sea water before pumps. They come in all shapes and sizes. Might be worth a shot.

Do I really need a starter?

I make starters with dry yeast, they just require being rehydrated. It's just one more quick step. John palmers How to Brew covers it well.

Do I really need a starter?

It's less expensive too. I can make a starter (DME, dry yeast, and yeast nutrient) for around 2$ a starter. You will pay at least double that for a WYEAST smack pack. I have had the smack packs fail to start. I have never had a starter not get going. So for me it's a better value to make a starter.

What's the worst craft brew (commercial) you've had?

At the American craft beer fest in Boston Haverhill brewery put out a salt beer. They are an awesome, award winning brewery, but this was a miss. Imagine a beer made with sea water. Yuck.

    Drilling problems through pot

How new are your bits? It seems like you're doing it right using the cutting oil and slow speed setting on your drill. Sharpening bits on a bench grinder can be tough, but I'm sure like a lot of other stuff there is a YouTube how to video. We use the drill doctor at work and it helps a ton. From...

What NOT to do: Near carboy EXPLOSION

I think he meant it wouldn't clog with krousen, not clog the opening in the carboy. Of course it will block the opening of the second carboy. I made a blowoff after I had my WIT blow the airlock off and spray up my basement wall, all over clean laundry, and into the ceiling rafters in my...

    Mr Blowoff

I had a thought, and it may not cost you a dime. Go to the scrap bin for the hose section of your local hardware store, use an inch of 3/4" ID x1" OD tubing along with a piece of 1"ID x 1 1/4 OD tubing. Fit the airlock in the 3/4 tubing then put the 1" over the 3/4", then jam it into the carboy...

    How do you kettle hop?

This I my hop bag. 3" of 2" aluminum pipe with all thread for the three legs. The bag is just a nylon paint strainer held on with a SS worm drive clamp. It works great.

    Mr Blowoff

Did you by a bung with a 3/4 inch hole or do you have a solution that is as creative as this airlock to connect to your carboy? Good work, cheers.

The beer that got you into beer

Easy for me, Deshuttess Black Butte Porter. Even now if I could only take one beer onto a desert island, that would be it.

Looking for a pumpkin porter extract recipe

My wife did this for her first brew last fall, it turned out awesome and was a really easy recipe. The book is full of extract clones of a bunch of popular beers. I do A/G but enjoy doing these every once and a while. Worth the 5$ I paid on amazon for it at the time.

    Angry responses

I was the OP of this thread. I have been cut up a bit for posting this. Let me clarify, I'm not a noob. I have in fact been brewing for over 5 years now. I didn't know HBT existed until recently. All I had when I started was the book How To Brew and my friend Will who I asked all sorts of dumb...

    Angry responses

Ha ha ha perfect response. I know most on here are good people, and for the most part everyone is cool and helpful. But what bugs me is those that are so miserable they try to make others miserable. There are those types everywhere you go, I guess.

    Angry responses

I have noticed more and more that the responses to fairly genuine questions have responses with a lot of sarcasm and attitude. I understand people are passionate, as am I but belittling someone on the Internet is a cowardly move. This isn't everybody by any stretch, but I just see an increasing...

If only we could get rid of the big 3

As a home brewer I respect what big beer does. Consistency over that much volume is extremely hard to do. That said what I dislike about them is how they lobby in DC to uphold laws that favor them and hold down smaller breweries I.e. the 3 tier system for distributing. Also I dislike how they...
