What I did for beer today

Weighed, Split the 255 lbs of assorted base Malts into neat 10 lb zip lock bags. All labeled, sorted (FIFO) and put into large storage bins. Next job - packaging up a 6 gallon batch of Czech pilsner and begin cold crash under pressure. Should be ready next week which is fine since I already...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Carolina Malt offered chit malt. Almost got some but still have to go thru about 10+ lbs of carapils. I am going to try it on my next re-up from the local malt house.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Sometimes I add some carapils for a foamier, longer lasting head. (12 oz for a 8 gal batch is typical). This is my go to "rally" beer for brewer's baseball games. When I pour a glass, we score runs. So... It is vital that I have a healthy batch as we approach October. The last batch was brewed...

    Ten gallon logistics

I do mostly 10 gal now but used to do all 5 gallons until I found it easier to double up so I could have more of an excellent batch. Ha. You will still probably use 5 gal batch fermenter sizes (7 gal brew bucket for example.) I got myself a "Y" splitter to put between my kettle and the...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewing now... Just mashed in an American Brown Ale, and evolution of 8 batches over the last year that became Live At The Apollo (James Brown Tribute). So tasty and my third iteration of the same recipe. Love it! About 5.8% ABV to 6% depending on how dry or sweet I want it to be. centennial and...

What no one wants to say

If you added some pickle juice, you'd get more vocal responses. Not that there is anything wrong with pickle juice. Ha

What no one wants to say

Having been around a while... And seen several boom/bust periods in the commercial beer market... Beer is going to be fine. It is a cyclical industry that had grown way too fat, and is clearly in a downward phase. So, we repeat history and many smaller, less viable, or debt heavy business won't...

What I did for beer today

Just got back from a trip to the Carolina Malt House. It's about an hour drive but the malt is excellent, fresh and well priced. (About $1.20 a pound, no shipping freight cost too). Picked up 100 lb of pilsner, 100 of Carolina Gold (kinda like golden promise), 15 lb of light and dark Munich, and...

    What are you drinking now?

Somewhere close to the last gallon of a HB American Brown Ale. Live at the Apollo. Enjoying a tall glass. Already have the grains weighed out for the next batch of it. Delicious!

    Headspace in fermenter under pressure

@doug293cz - the analysis link above made me sit down, realizing I was overwhelmed by the breakdown of gases, pressures, etc. whoa. Very nice, and happy to be in awe. Wow. So ... A question for this thread... If I am fermenting with a 10 gallon torpedo corny with a modified lid (w 1 1/2"...

What I did for beer today

Busy beer Monday. Just finished calibrating the EasyDens. All dialed in now. Noticed I was getting lower OG readings compared to perceived sweetness. Normally... I taste it and guess the OG... And have gotten very good at the game. Which is why I knew I needed to calibrate it. All set now...

What came in the mail for you today?

Over the weekend I got this Stainless steel bad boy - a 10 gallon torpedo megamouth with a 1 1/2" triclamp on the lid (hop bong, prv, CIP cleaning etc. thanks @Bobby_M at BrewHardware.com). Going to use it soon to brew a German Pilsner in the ferm chamber. It's tight, but it fits fine. It can...

Filtering wort from Foundry to fermenter

Yes ... 1/2 tablet of whirlfloc per 5 gallons. And whirlpool for 15 min, settle for 15 min. I do this late in the boil ... So I get some whirlpool action while my immersion chiller cools the wort. It is amazing how much hop particle debris gets packed on the Heat exchanger disk of my Brewzilla...
