    Lees

I racked my apple wine from the bucket to the Carboy less then 2 days ago. It already has 2 inches of lees. Should I rack off the lees or leave it a bit longer.

    Thermometer

Hi, I bought the one you can stick on the outside of the bucket or Carboy. Super cheap and works well.

When to get an SG reading during primary fermentation?

It allows you to take wine out of your bucket or Carboy. It's a long hollow tube. You can place your hydrometer in it to take a reading. If you don't have one you could place your hydrometer right in the wine and get a reading. I think some may prefer to have a greater air surface at the...

When to get an SG reading during primary fermentation?

I have used vitners reserve and it came out great. I have taken readings the day after I started and had no issues at all. Do you have a wine thief? Of course sanitization is important.

When to get an SG reading during primary fermentation?

Hi, Congratulations on your first batch. What are you making? Are you using a bucket or Carboy? When I start my wine I use a bucket and cover it with a sanitized plastic mesh bag I bought at the brewing store. Once it reaches around 1.020 I transfer it to the Carboy. I have also placed the...

    Too much wine

Darn...as it turned out I had just the right amount for the Carboy; so none left over. I guess that's better than having not enough.

    Bubbles

Hi, Ok...that is very helpful. I have a hard lemonade and an apple wine that are both in that range. I will leave them alone.

    Bubbles

Hi, Is it safe to say that as long as the wine is fermenting in the Carboy and there are a lot of bubbles it is wise to stir to help release the gas?

    Too much wine

Will move my apple wine from the bucket to Carboy. If I have wine left over what could I do with it? Can I save it to top up when I rack in a months time or so?

    Stalled lemonade

It's a miracle! I just checked it and it's 1.026. That is down from 1.036 on December 9th. Looks like we may have some lemonade to add to our cranberry juice at Christmas. Thanks for your help

    Stalled lemonade

Oh darn... I did nor keep the package. I think it was 118 ...does that sense?

    Stalled lemonade

I truly appreciate your help and input. I had some nutrient so fed it about 5 tsp. (5 gallon batch). I have no energizer, maybe I should pick some up. It has been so consistent at the same reading for so long that I'm pretty convinced it is stalled. I will be stirring a couple of times a day...

    Stalled lemonade

Hi Jacob, Thanks for your post. I never thought of that, maybe it would make a difference. I took numerous readings and it was consistently 1.036. I plan to stir it a couple of times a day to release the bubbles. I hope it works, I would hate to lose the whole batch.

    Stalled lemonade

Hi jdrum, I think you are right. The yeast slurry did nothing. I will stir the crap out it to see if it helps.

    Stalled lemonade

I added another yeast slurry to this last night (December 9). Crossing my fingers it works Anyone have any luck with adding yeast to a stalled wine?

    Stuck fermentation

Hi, Just wondering if your fermentation took off?

    Stalled lemonade

Hi, Thanks for replying. Lesson learned for me! That's what I will do. Thanks again.

    Stalled lemonade

Hi Yooper, I certainly don't see often that you are unsure what to do. Ha, Ha. I have learned a lot from you! I think I racked from the primary to Carboy too early; it seemed to have stalled the fermentation. I hope the stirring will suspend the yeast and kick start it again. Do you think it...

    Stalled lemonade

Hi, on December 4, 2011 I gave it a gentle stir in the Carboy in the hopes it would suspend the yeast and get the fermentation going again. There is A LOT of gas in it. Just small gentle stirs created a lot of foam and small bubbles... More than you would get in champagne. Should I stir daily...

    Stalled lemonade

Hi, Given the information above, would you say it would be a good idea to gently stir it to have the yeast suspended again? I did try to shake the Carboy a bit but that did not seem to help. Thanks
