☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

I got an electric tea kettle with temperature controls and used it with my French press. I heated the water to 200 and was shocked at the difference it made. Way less bitterness than using straight boiling water from the stove top tea kettle. It was almost like a totally different coffee bean...

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

I have been having some beans that don’t ever seem to puff up and first crack is very subtle. I keep over roasting them. I can’t figure out if it’s just a bad batch of beans, maybe something I am doing wrong, or maybe some beans are just like that. One is a Costa Rica and the other is a Tanzania.

I’m glad to see that you got a good offer on your roaster but sad that I won’t be seeing it on my kitchen counter. It’s all good though, I wouldn’t have paid more than 250-275. I should start surfing eBay more often.

    Anyone use something like this?

I just sold my brew rig because I quit brewing recently but it isn’t too difficult to make one and would cost less than what you are planning. It would also be much safer and care free once you have it up and running.

I agree that it is a fire hazard, and a possible asphyxiation hazard, and that electric is a way better option. You should do what works best for you though. You should also check your local building codes as mentioned but you would not have to get the equipment inspected. Only the gas line...

I vacuum sealed my first big order but they don’t usually last me long. I think I go through 2 lbs a week and I order about 6 lbs every 2 weeks so that I always have a fresh supply.

    Anyone use something like this?

Yeah plumber. I don’t know what the cost is there but the low end cost for a plumber in my area is around $120 per hour and I have seen upwards of $200 for the high. If your gas line is properly bonded to your electrical panel then you could use CSST flexible gas pipe which would save you a...

    Anyone use something like this?

I have seen a similar burner if not that exact same one in a commercial kitchen. It was a Korean restaurant and they use it for a wok. The flame looked like a jet engine LOL. He said you have to use a really hot flame for stir fry. So yeah it should work well for boiling water fast.

    Anyone use something like this?

That will work but on a hot day you will wish you had an exhaust fan instead. I know this from experience LOL

How long can you store green coffee beans in the ziplock bags they come in? I will probably roast it all in the next 3 weeks or so but just wondering if I should vacuum seal them or is that unnecessary. How do commercial roasters store their beans?

☕ Coffee ☕: Ingredients, Roasting, Grinding, Brewing, and Tasting

Oh no I will be taking the advice I have recently gathered from this thread. I will watch it for 6 months while the price comes down and then give you a low ball offer and settle somewhere between ;)

    Anyone use something like this?

It would depend on how far you are wanting to go with your gas line. Call a plumber. I agree with spartan though, you are going to need to vent out the CO and steam that is being generated. A typical kitchen exhaust fan should suffice depending on the size of the room. I suggest going electric...

    Buy a brew belt?

A high of 68 will not hurt your beer. I regularly ferment at around 70. I have even won 1st place for a German lager that I fermented at 70 by putting my fermentor in a pot of water, covering it with a black shirt, and changed out ice packs through out the day each day to keep the water temp...
