    DIY PID controller

I find it’s easier to search using Google with Homebrewtalk inthe key word. Here’s a thread that popped up:220V eBIAB Design - Wiring Diagram Review on post number 3 there is a good schematic for a single vessel controller (element output and switchable pump outlet) it’s very similar to the one...

    DIY PID controller

I built my own controller and had similar questions when I got started. Here’s a couple thoughts: make sure you know what you have available for power where you plan to brew, if you’re in North America then a 2kw element would require a 120v 20 amp receptacle which most newish homes should have...

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

@Bobby_M thanks for the picture and description. I’ve sent you a PM.

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

You know I never really thought about trying a pvc manifold. Thanks for the suggestion. Just as a little update to the thread I’ve decided to continue using my ebiab kettle for most of my brewing but I still want to have the ability to use a mash tun for big grain bills or when brewing outdoors...

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

Ok, looking again I don't think I could quite fit the FB under the Recirculation port as it is now. But, the more I think about it a spincycle aimed slightly downward should cause some mixing in the heated area under the FB. This of course is dependant on me being able to bend the outer rim of...

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

Bobby, that's sort of the idea that I had as well. It's close, I'll have to take a few measurements to see if I could get that to work. How would you get the discharge to be below the FB though? Would I need a custom bent tube that bent downward and then to the side? Another idea I had was...

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

I want to thank you all for taking the time to give me some ideas and feedback. I guess bottom line I have several different options going forward. I find the smaller batch concept to be quite appealing but at the same time I would feel like I was letting my large kettle and controller go to...

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

Haha, thanks for offering to help Bobby. I’ll try to post some pictures: My mistakes was having spike weld the recirculation port too high, I now know that it could have been at the same height as the drain. As it is I have the bolts for the false bottom at the full length they came as. I do...

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

Yes, the BrewHardware false bottom I described is one that I only use when doing recirculating ebiab. When doing so I do mash with the full volume but what I was trying to say is that depending on the batch size or the gravity I might end up with a very thick mash in the bag above the false...

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

Sounds like rice hulls would be an easy addition to try, I’ll grab some for my next batch. I’m pretty sure my bag is the 200 micron so pretty tight; that said it flows fine when I use it for single vessel ebiab. I’ll try to answer this; the main issue has to do with the amount of wort under...

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

Sounds exactly like what I had happen yesterday. I haven’t actually tried a braid before; am I right that with a braid I won’t be able to fly sparge?

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

Okay, some good questions there. I actually just brewed yesterday using the cooler for the first time in a while. I aimed for a mash thickness of about 1.5 quarts per pound (I say about because I use metric units) I milled at 0.035" (barley crusher) and used my wilser brew bag although as I...

Mash Tun brewers: looking for some tips

All right, I'll try to keep this post from turning into a novel but I've tried a lot of different approaches to brewing and I'm looking for advice in regards to making my brew day more problem free. Like others, my progression in this hobby has left me with a closet full of equipment that...

    Starsan to sanitize bottles?

Star San is a popular sanitizer for bottles. I would think that as long as your bottling tree was clean and sanitary that you could allow them to dry upside down and bottle the next day with no problem. I’ve also noticed some discrepancy between the warnings on the bottle and typical home...

Bottling straight from SS brew bucket?

I bottle from the spigot of a fermonster all the time. I hook the bottling wand to a short chunk of tubing that slides tightly onto the barb. The first pour goes into my hydrometer flask along with a little yeastiness. After that the beer coming out is nice and clear as long as I don’t rouse the...

    Beer faucet internal rust?

Is the corrosion in the faucet or the shank? I know my ss faucets are pristine after about 4 years but I cheaped out and got plated brass shanks which have long ago lost their plating on the inside. When I take the faucets off for cleaning I can see that the inside of the shank is an orangey...

What should I do with extra wort intended for topping up a sour?

Ooh, that’s an interesting idea! I’m in Canada, I’ll have to take a look at what local beers have live bacteria in the bottle.

What should I do with extra wort intended for topping up a sour?

Thanks for the confirmation, haha. I ended up freezing the wort in ziplock bags. I like the idea of bringing it to pasteurization temp rather than boiling before adding back to the main fermenter. Fingers crossed.

What should I do with extra wort intended for topping up a sour?

Okay, I'll try to explain; I'm making my first long term sour using Wyeast's Roeselare blend and I'm wanting to ferment/age in a 6G better bottle carboy with minimal headspace. Today I brewed 6G of wort but I know that I'll have massive blow off if I put it all in the fermenter so I only put 5G...

    1.00000 - Any explanation?

I don’t really have an answer other than that I believe the reading should be taken at the bottom of the meniscus. Now it’s hard to tell in the photo because of the bubbles present but I would read that as 1.002 or maybe even 1.004 - still dry but more believable I’d say. Also, did you take into...
