Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Jury is out for cold crashing my CF10 with my setup. Should be doing that in the next week or so. I’m hoping everything goes well for it, but no clue how low I’ll be able to get it.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

This was the one I read most closely. Pictures in the original post are down unfortunately, but it helps. I also looked at a few more and some YouTube videos. The Ole' Window AC - Glycol Chiller Build...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

+1 on the glycol system. Scratch and dent 5000 BTU ac unit, inkbird, Coleman extreme cooler and some elbow grease and it is working great. I planned to encase my cooler in some extra insulation to help hold temperature, but it seems to be doing well without it. Runs a couple times a day at most...

    Refractometer versus Hydrometer

Don’t feel dumb- if you are part of AHA or get Zymurgy magazine, this question is brought up in the May/June 2019 issue again (page 27- Refractometer Woes). I never understood it either, so I’ve always used the refractometer between mash and boil only, hydrometer anytime after I add hops...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

I have a ferm wrap mat heater that I wrapped around the cone part of the conical and taped in place. I didn’t order the jacket for the conical until it was already full, so that is currently off. I’m thinking without great contact on the conical and the heat is probably more radiating outward...

New To Home Brewing & Looking Forward to Learning

Welcome! You’ve come to the right place. I’ve been a stalker of these forums for years due to others’ wisdom and guidance, just recently becoming a member and supporter. A lot of great knowledge from many members here who can answer pretty much any question. You’ll hear a lot of “read, read...

High OG- What did I do?

I seriously considered not boiling. I use a yarn (I forget the micron size) and carbon block filter on my water source as I have yet to venture into the world of R.O. Here in southern NJ my water often has the smell of chlorine they add so much, so I mostly try to rid myself of that at least. So...

What came in the mail for you today?

Had the spike TC100 temp controls show up today. FedEx guy pulled up just as I was throwing my immersion chiller in the boil kettle. Perfect timing.

High OG- What did I do?

Well part laziness, part me wanting to top off prior to active fermentation (ie not waste time) and a lot of me trying to not be ripping and tearing and wake the child. So I boiled and chilled in a very large kettle, then balanced said kettle off center on an upside down five gallon bucket...

High OG- What did I do?

Thanks for all the help to all. Boiled and chilled some water and added, was able to get up to like 11.5 gal with the equipment available to me (lets just say it was a “don’t try this at home” moment). Still not a session, but I’m thinking I will end up drinking it regardless. Just was worried...

High OG- What did I do?

Just made some edits in the recipe based on the comment above and some numbers from today’s brew. Changed the batch volume (had said 12 gals), and fixed the efficiency (was 72%, changed to 78%), grain bill, boil off volume, etc. Changing grain bill to 18 lb 2-row and 2 lb caramel it comes out...

High OG- What did I do?

Thanks for the input. Didn’t really think about this, but either I or the software added extra 2row when I made the recipe for a 10 gallon batch vs 5 gal. My notes show as a 5 gal it was 9 lbs 2-row, somehow I upped it to the 23 lbs. Even at 9 I guess it isn’t a true session, but much smaller...

High OG- What did I do?

So I just finished a planned 10 gallon batch of a session IPA that I’ve made a few times on my old system (as a 5 gallon previously). Recipe: 23 lb 2-row 3.5 lb Caramel Malt 40L Mash at 152F for 60 min 1 oz centennial 60 minute 2 oz cascade 20 minute 1 oz centennial 15 minute 2 oz cascade 10...

20 gallon mash tun for 5-10g batches, am I crazy?

“Don’t tell my wife” - seems the more brewing experience I get the more I am thinking that too.

What came in the mail for you today?

Just got my CF10 and it was in the box for about long enough for the FedEx guy to get off my front porch before I was tearing it open and putting pieces together. They should have an “early morning” delivery option, waiting until 3:30 pm for it to arrive was killer.

20 gallon mash tun for 5-10g batches, am I crazy?

It does look like a pretty neat item. Especially since it matches the other vessels. I’m sure @Jaybird can probably help you out with a drain tube of some sort if you need it (he has a “do you need a one-off part” topic on here). For some people (guilty) part of the enjoyment of this hobby is...

20 gallon mash tun for 5-10g batches, am I crazy?

I just had the internal struggle you’re dealing with now. I was tired of stuck sparges due to the way my false bottom sat in the bottom of my 10 gallon cooler mash tun. However, I felt if I was buying new I should go with a little more volume (especially after my wife got me a 30 gallon brew...
