First Partial Mash and No Clue What Will Happen

I have a super-thin SS pot that you think would lose heat like crazy. However I find as long as my water + grain is nearly to the top of the pot (maybe 1" to 2" of headspace) then I don't lose a single degree over the entire hour! I usually heat 7.5 to 8L of water up to 75C (about 168F), mash...

Where should I go in Germany?

If you're able to find it (it's out on the internet somewhere for download! Or perhaps at your local library?) I highly recommend watching The Beer Hunter with Michael Jackson, specifically the episode entitled "Germany - The Fifth Element". That will give you a fantastic feel for the beer...

    Brew Festa

I have it on tap right now! 3 weeks in the primary -> 4 weeks natural conditioning in a corney an it tastes awesome. However if you're looking for an exact Corona clone you're going to have to bottle in in clear glass and leave it in direct sunlight for a few days to get that distinct skunky...

Water bottles work for bottle conditioning

I'm a little disorganized with my bottle keeping and when it comes time to bottle I always have a combination of plastic & glass. The plastic bottles I use include both the 0.5L PET bottles that homebrew shops sell, as well as the 591mL coke-style bottles (I prefer ones that come with club...

Brewhouse kit question: temp of added water?

I've used both Festa & Brewhouse kits. I prefer the Festa as they're "Dump & go", so perfect for those times in your life where you're just too busy to brew but still want to make homebrew. Also they come with different yeasts for different styles of beer (Brewhouse seem to only come with...

    Average Drinking.....

Usually try to keep it to 1 pint (500ml) per weeknight in order to keep my liver un-cirrhosised as possible and in order to keep the beer-belly at bay. On the weekends..maybe 3 or 4 pints per night? Although I must say it takes tremendous self discipline (which i occasionally lack) not to go...

    Clear Plastic Leaf garbage bags

ps - Do you think it would be possible to sterilize the bag by roasting it the oven for a while before filling it? It's already made to withstand the heat!

    Clear Plastic Leaf garbage bags

I've never heard of Turkey-bags, but for $1/piece seems like a small price to pay for insurance of not having a scratched up bucket (/clogging the shower while cleaning out the yeast cake. Wives do not like this). Thanks for all the great info! Now to try and find a turkey bag at the local...

    Clear Plastic Leaf garbage bags

Hello Everyone, I was at my lhbs the other day and while waiting in line struck up a conversation with a couple of older home-brewers. They have sadly since moved from home brewing to in-store brewing (too heavy lifting fermenters i guess?). They said back in the day when they used to brew...

    Pet bottles

I've reused my caps many times with no problems. Not sure what others do but so far I haven't had any issues at all! Just make sure to sanitize the caps same as the bottles.

    Pet bottles

I like to use Club Soda bottles. No flavour in the original container means no off-flavours transferring to your beer! If you do use clear PET bottles it's no problem so long as you store your beer in the dark. I keep mine in a box in the basement and have never experienced any skunking off...

    Finishing in a Corny....

I "corny condition" every other batch or so and let it sit around for a month or so as I find the extra time allows the flavour to really develop nicely. There is sometimes an issue with the seating the lid as low pressure co2 will slowly leak out thus preventing your beer from carbonating...

question about dry hopping in primary

Thanks for the info Smizak. I've got an IPA on the go now and will try your method tonight!

    Hopped Malt

I'm not from Toronto, but live just outside in Hamilton. I've been to every brew shop in the area and have found Brew Time to be by far the best. They don't do any online orders, but if you get a chance check out their shop. They have everything you could possibly want (specialty grains...

question about dry hopping in primary

I've always used a small cheesecloth bag for pellets. Are you saying it's possible to just throw 'em in the way they are and they'll settle out in the bottom with the rest of the trub? If so that would make things that much easier for me!

    anyone use brewhouse?

I find using a regular bottle opener and a very firm grip helps. If at first you don't succeed and tear the plastic of the cap (so the bottle opener has nothing to grip to) rotate a few degrees and try again. They definitely don't make them easy to open so if anyone else has a better way I'd...

    anyone use brewhouse?

Brew House kits do always seem to turn out great for me, although I've never tried different yeasts so perhaps that is the next step! I also use these kits quite a bit: Festa Brew. They're very similar to Brew House except 1) You don't add any water, the kits are a full 23L of wort 2) Every...

    Cheapest & Best Extract Kits......

The best deals I've found (and easiest kits to make) are the all-grain 'wort-in-a-bag' kit. There are two main brands I can get at my local homebrew shop: Festa Brew and Brew House. These are dump-in-a-fermenter-and-go so they're very easy, very cheap and very tasty! a 23L kit usually sells...

5 Gallon Brewing and bottling buckets

My LHBS sells it's yeast in 15g packets which is good for 46L (10 Gallons). I usually split it into two by measure 7.5g out on my hop scale. You should be able to do the same with your regular size yeast packet!

To 2nd or Not to 2nd

I am curious as to what coconut beer would be like. What is the base...a wheat or malt (or rice?) concoction? Do you have a recipe are are you just winging it? I am quite interested!!
