Fermentation Chamber - Freezer Chest or Upright Fridge?

Only Ales at this point. The problem I have with the swamp cooler is my schedule...can't always be around to drop in ice or frozen H2o bottles. I want to be able to put in a freezer or fridge and leave it alone for 3-4 weeks. On my first beer, I kept a damp t-shirt over the bucket and placed...

Fermentation Chamber - Freezer Chest or Upright Fridge?

Being new to the brewing game and living in GA, I'm quickly finding that maintaining steady fermenting temps in the summer is not easy and has, I believe, created some off flavors in my beer. In an effort to create the ideal temps for fermenting my primaries and secondaries, I'm hoping to get...

Just scored a 7cu ft chest freezer for cheap!!

Thanks, Jsamp. A breast milk stout? I've got a buddy that would lap that up.

Just scored a 7cu ft chest freezer for cheap!!

I've been looking for the same reason. May I ask what kind of temp. controller you're ordering and where you're ordering it from? We currently have a chest freezer, but my wife won't let me use it for fermentation, she says "all the breast milk I've stored for the baby will spoil!" Is she...

    Masterbuilt Turkey Fryer ?

Good News. While perusing Craigslist I found a 55K BTU Bayou Classic Turkey Fryer w/ a heavy duty pot for $30! It's in great shape and runs like new. On my way to all grain...

    To Build or Buy?

Was your's 3/8" inside or outside dimension? The piece I looked at was 3/8" inside and 1/2" outside.

    To Build or Buy?

BTW - You all are talking about 3/8" inside diameter, not outside, correct?

    To Build or Buy?

Okay, just got back from Lowe's. They want $40 for 20' of 3/8" copper tubing. Ouch! Man, I knew copper was high, but that's silly. With hardware, & such I figure it'd be $50 total for a wort chiller of that size...which sounds way undersized for the 5 gal. batches I hope to soon be brewing.

    To Build or Buy?

Gotcha. Know what it is, jut not familiar with the abbreviation. I see a lot of you use 3/8", is that because it's more common or it's easier to find fitting for connections? Both? The larger the diameter of the tube, the quicker the cool-down, right?

    To Build or Buy?

A wort chiller. I've watched a few videos onlline on how to build your own, looks pretty easy and I like the idea of saving the about 50%. Anybody have a strong opinion one way or another? Also, what would be the ideal length? I was thinking about getting 25' of 1/2" copper tubing. Would...

    Masterbuilt Turkey Fryer ?

Thanks for the info guys. Hmmmm, I thought 30 qts = 7.5 gal. Need to check my math on that. Didn't know about the low BTU's. I will be brewing in a carport in GA. So maybe the 38,000 BTU will be sufficient?

    Masterbuilt Turkey Fryer ?

So, I'm in the process of slowly transitioning into All Grain Brewing and have been looking at Turkey Fryers. My local Home Depot sells a Masterbuilt 30qt. Propane style for about $60. My main concern is the quality of the the product, namely the pot (which is listed as stainless). Anyone...

    Omg! Way better with age!

Is there anyway to retain aromas/freshness that is lost over time. Once bottle-conditioned, would refrigeration help? I ask because a buddy and I just brewed an IPA together last weekend - we live a several hours apart and I won't be able to get my half for at least a few months. Maybe it...

Steeping Temp went above 170 Degrees

Thanks for all the info. The water temp rose to 170+ for only a few minutes. I did not squeeze the bag, knew better than that. We hopped the heck out of it, so yeah, I'm hoping any potential off flavors that may have developed would be overshadowed by the hops. FYI, we used Warrior &...

Steeping Temp went above 170 Degrees

Newb here. I was brewing an IPA with a friend of mine and we got busy bullsh*itting and such...anyhow, the steeping temperature for our specialty grains went above 170 deg, briefly. I was on it quickly and and reduced the temp. I'm wondering, though, how much affect this may have on the beer...

    Help me build a beer?

A buddy and I are brewing together for the first time next week and can't decide on a recipe. I've only got one brew under my belt and he's done a half-dozen or so - and we'll be using extracts. We both love higher-gravity beers, IPA's, Belgian dubbels & trippels and such. I was hoping to...
