What does a good primary fermenter smell like?

Holy crap. I just bottled the Irish Red from midwest (batch 1). I just took a sample of the double IPA from midwest (batch 2). I just made a thread about how it stung my nose. Great minds think alike!

    noxious fumes?

I took a gravity reading today and I took a big whiff from the open bucket fermenter... It burned the **** out of my nose. Is that normal? It had some suspicious filmy looking bubbles... I'll post a picture if I can find a place to host it. It is hop head double IPA extract kit from midwest.

    Oh No

I was able to stick the 7/16 tubing that came with my kit right into the hole on my bucket. If you can do that, then there's no need to run it through your airlock first.

    Ways to increase boil temperature

The more stuff you dissolve in the water, i.e. the higher the gravity, the higher the boiling point will be. Boiling-point elevation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cooling wort as fast as possible or allow to cool?

What would you do with the cold break if you're using the type of cooler where the wort goes through a tube?

Why does commercial beer get skunky?

I'm not that interested in anything extreme. I just want to know if you buy chilled beer and let it warm to room temp before chilling it again if it really has any impact.

Why does commercial beer get skunky?

I've heard this, but I wonder if it is really true. Anyone know? That is really cool :D

    Bottling sucks!

I just bottled my first batch and it didn't seem that bad.

    Dry, Liquid, or both

Well, technically, that formula is based on the difference, not the ratio.

    Dry, Liquid, or both

    Did you read my post?

    Dry, Liquid, or both

They wouldn't include ingredients that are not intended to be used.

    Dry, Liquid, or both

From my interpretation, he has an ingredient kit, not just a recipe. Use whatever it came with. The instructions were probably written so they could be used for any kit. If they included liquid and dry, it's because you need to use both, not to let you pick one and let the other go unused.

    Gusher?

Gas is more soluble in a liquid at lower temperatures.

    bottle sanitizing

Wow, I hope this doesn't happen to me. I just baked my first batch of bottles.
  15. T

    bottle sanitizing

I don't have a bottle tree. I don't see why it would be necessary to re-sanitize the lip of the bottle after the oven if it was covered in foil.

    bottle sanitizing

Thanks. I will probably do my first batch this way. Sounds way easier than anything else
  17. T

    bottle sanitizing

Well, you certainly don't want an infection, so I'm confused.
  18. T

    bottle sanitizing

I'm just a noob but why sanitize anything if you aren't going to sanitize the caps? It's touching your beer. It needs to be sanitized. It's not being "extra careful".

    Improved boiling on the stovetop!

I wonder if I could just wrap some cardboard in aluminum foil.

What does oxygenated beer taste like?

On a related note, is there any value in using oxygen absorbing caps? Is there any reason not to?
