No wonder I am having trouble cooling my wort.

Just measured my tap at 39F. Summer may move it up into the 50s I can't remember exactly. We are still leaving our water run (utility request) to keep laterals from freezing. Pretty sure lines are buried at least 6' around here. If you're having problems chilling your wort, consider moving to da...

If you were stranded on a desert island....

Who said a desert island is warm? Your beer would probably be frozen on Devon island. I'll have a nice thick Stout.

Spa Panel Arrived! Now what's the best way to wire it up?

Yes. That should get power into your control box just fine. You may need some additional fuses or breakers in your control panel though. Especially if you run a full 50A feed. You should start with a good wiring diagram. If you don't have one there are plenty around here to start with. You can...

Spa Panel Arrived! Now what's the best way to wire it up?

It depends on how you plan to layout your control panel. If you could mount the spa panel right next to it, I would use a short piece of conduit or conduit nipple to connect them together. Then you can pull individual conductors from the spa panel to the control box and don't need more...

    Help with temperature control?

Thank you Doug. Critically damped. The terminology alone should help. The PID's are from Auber if that makes any difference. I have a standard coil element style hotplate arriving in a few days. I think that will help. I only got the cast iron because they seemed like they would support the...

    Help with temperature control?

You are correct. I started with PID's and swapped in one of the easy boil's to see if it might work. It's not working that well.

I'll try that next chance I have to mess with it.

    Help with temperature control?

I'm finding it very frustrating too. The pid with auto tuning was way off. It initially heated to the setpoint, shut down and the temperature kept climbing at least 20 degrees overshoot. This was with 3 batches (~30lbs) of oil. I let it run the rest of the tuning cycle and it overshot again...

    3Phase 60amp SubPanel for 120v RIMS system

It's your house. I don't know that that is a specific code violation as long as you use a proper cord, I guess it would be okay. I would look for a more elegant solution myself. Could you put a receptacle back to back with the existing dryer outlet and use the existing dryer feed to power the...

    Help with temperature control?

I'm still just in the testing stage with this. We heated three batches of oil on the first test. Once everything was liquified enough, I stirred occasionally to see how evenly the heat was being distributed. When stirring, I only noticed a degree or two of difference. The pot is triclad. It must...

    Help with temperature control?

BrunDog, I was hoping you might see this. You seem to be on top of this stuff. The probes are PT100. I had to locate them low in the kettles to allow for batching. I'm actually surprised at the visible convention with the oil. Stirring did not seem to drastically affect the reading at least not...

    3Phase 60amp SubPanel for 120v RIMS system

You would have to get a 240V feed out of the panel to your brew area somehow. You could run that to a receptacle or straight into a spa panel. A picture of the panel and brew area would help to make some suggestions.

    3Phase 60amp SubPanel for 120v RIMS system

If the panel is that close, it shouldn't cost much to run a 240V feed. Or a few dedicated 120 receptacles if you want to go that way.

    3Phase 60amp SubPanel for 120v RIMS system

That is just a 3 pole breaker, not a subpanel. I don't see how it would be useful in your situation. The spa panels are used mainly to provide GFCI protection and what you have will not. What is the existing service in the garage? Is there a panel?

    Help with temperature control?

Thanks. It helps just to know you're rooting for me. I have to admit I'm not as patient with figuring out these controls as I should be. I'm hoping some of the experts around here can save me some more gray hairs. Cheese eh?

    Help with temperature control?

This is not brewing related although it looks like it could be. I wonder how that happened?;) Here is the setup. The heat comes from two cheap 1500W hot plates. The intent is for the kettles to batch out oil and lye for soapmaking. So the initial heating could vary between three and seven...

I like this time at night on HBT

Hey Dan. Project looks great. I've been working on setting up a soap kitchen for my wife's business. I started January 22 and I'm almost done. This is the garage of her photography/bath and body shop.
