    Intro

Howdy Jason, welcome to HBT. I brew here in Gulf Coast Texas (similar temps) and do Ales. Now that our short winter is here ( a few weeks) I may try to squeeze in a batch or two of lager if I can get the ingredients in time. I have a fermentation Chamber (old freezer a neighbor gave me, and a...

Poll: Do you have, or plan to get, an electric car?

Kent, You need to call your agent for the discount. Verbotten EV has to be in the lease. Insurance guys are capitalists. They will make you work for it.

Poll: Do you have, or plan to get, an electric car?

Nah Kent. I never had one ICE vehicle spontaneously combust just sitting there (unlike EV's). But, OTOH EV's seem to go splodey in a regular fashion. And there is the discount. Money talks, BS walks

Poll: Do you have, or plan to get, an electric car?

I added a clause to my rental property lease agreements that EV's are verbotten in garage and on property (including driveway) and must be parked on the street (public property). Talk to your insurance guy if you have rental properties. You may be able to get a discount. I did.

Making Traditional rice Wine. Cheap, Fun, and Different

Switched out the muslin for a piece of folded over cheesecloth sanitized with star san. The cheesecloth seemed a little looser (more air flow) than the muslin which was quite tight. Quick question: Has anyone ever tried to vacuum filter the final product (Buchner or fritted glass funnel on...

Making Traditional rice Wine. Cheap, Fun, and Different

Started with 3 cups dry rice before washing the rice and soaking 4 hours and followed by steaming 45 minutes. Rice cooled on plates before adding hammer crushed yeast balls and mixing in with clean hands. I used 2 yeast balls. AC set on 80 here (heat off). Piece of muslin under lid. Lid, jar...

Family secrets: I just found out yesterday Daddy got rid of Great Grand Dads still decades ago

passedpawn, yep you are so correct, it most likely sucked compared to my organic glassware (I'm a chemist) but just for the history..I'd put that thing as a centerpiece in the L.R.. Your beer can wall ? OMG. I'm an idiot. I have drank beers all over the world. Never saved the cans. Drank em in...

Family secrets: I just found out yesterday Daddy got rid of Great Grand Dads still decades ago

I'm older (almost 70) and was talking to my younger sister who just told me my father got rid of a still that was at my deceased Great Uncles house back in the 80's. I helped clean that house out, but apparently it was buried under a lotta crap in the shed and I never saw it. She described it ...

Welcome to HBT from Texas. I don't distill (well I do, but not for alcohol) because I don't need or want the ATF in my life (they came for the still but stayed for the plethora of guns and ammo)🤣. I'm a chemist so I have a rudimentary understanding of distillation and many hours under my belt...

Making Traditional rice Wine. Cheap, Fun, and Different

Starting my first batch of rice wine today, will keep you posted. I came to HBT for beer brewing knowledge , picked up a nasty mead brewing habit, started making my own yogurt and now I'm off to rice wine land. You guys are a bad influence. :) I'm using this rice and yeast balls. I ordered them...

What came in the mail for you today?

Been a bit tardy in opening packages but finally got em all open. Bought some more fermenting buckets, three 1 gallon fermenters for experimental batches of beer, rice wine and mead. Various hops, DME and grains. Bought another Chinese pickle jar and some glutinous rice and yeast balls for rice...

Can you use already fermenting honey to make mead?

I've been busy and am tryin to catch up now. Started a 5 gallon batch of modified JAOM Oct 28th. Threw in the raisins, spices, then I zested the orange and threw in the zested peel, orange segments cut in half and left out the white pith. I heated the fermenting honey a bit (to 150F) to kill off...
