What came in the mail for you today?

OOpps, just walked out to a mailbox fulla hops rhizomes and such from BuyHopsRhizomes.com. I ordered these in December and forgot all about them. I have 1 bag of B grade mixed unidentified rhizomes (I'm guessing about 20 in there) 1 grower kits(comes with 5 cascade roots,5 paper twine, and 5...

    Reading a hydrometer - confused

In all the chemistry courses I slept through from junior high all the way through college, they always said to read the meniscus from the bottom (.980) per the illustration. My dad had one of those suction hydrometers (Loxford) and used it for testing antifreeze concentration.

Any feedback on the Captain Crush Grain Mill?

I was in the market for my first mill for some cost savings long term and researched some threads (including this one) on the subject rather than bothering everyone with questions. I ended up ordering the Monster Mill 3 geared (not the MM3 pro). I got their base and hopper also rather than...

    My Quest for Real Ale

Those cubitainers are neat. Thanks for that. I brew ales exclusively (so far) because I like the taste and bottle condition to get it carbed. Maybe not "real ale" by some definitions but for me it's close enough. I do 6 gallon batches (DME, steeped grains etc) and always ferment 2 weeks at 70F...

Welcome back from a Texas member. I currently do extracts with a mini mash for the same reason. As you stated, it's a time issue.

So what do you seek in a cup?

I prefer glass vessels to consume beer, I have a tulip, an english pub glass, a pint glass, but as a chemist my favorite go to is a set of "beer chemistry" glasses , They are adorned with the chemical structures of the various compounds in beer (H20, CO2, Lupulone, humulene, glucose, ethanol...

    What are you drinking now?

I bought some of the St Arnold Christmas beer (sorta local, brewed in Houston) and it was delicious. Just drank the last one. I went back after New Year and no more CHristmas beer to be had. But I did buy 2 other ones by the same brewer. The amber ale is quite tasty, but not as good as mine. I...

    Leaking copper pipes

Dland, I'm on a well, pH about 6.5 (makes great beer). If you are lower than that it is the acidity eating up your pipes. Safe pH range for copper pipe are 6.5-8.5. Outside of that range copper will corrode. A Calcite tank will bring your pH to 7. I put one in just in case, but pull my brew...

    Bray's One Month Mead

Geez, I did the FG on the BOMM at 30 days and it's reading 0.998. I 've never gotten that low before. I took a sip and it's Sahara dry. I think I will split it into 3 parts, leave 1/3 as is , backsweeten 1/3 and then heat/kill the yeast, back sweeten the last 1/3 and let it bottle carb for...

    Intro

Howdy Jason, I mostly use the S shaped ones but if the fermentation is vigorous I use the 3 piece ones. If its real vigourous (Kviek Lutra yeast etc.) I used a bottling tube clipped to / submerged in a bucket of water. I have been making over 5 gallons so when I leave behind the trub etc., I...

    Intro

Howdy Jason, I dont worry too much about the beer as it is boiled which sanitizes everything. I use PBW (warm) to clean tough crud on my fermentation bucket (requires rinsing with same temp water). I sanitize all buckets (fermentation and bottling) with Star San (doesn't need rinsing). I make...
