    Metallic/astringent

Never had the problem so I never needed it analyzed. Next brew will be a different water source. and yes, 5! I had two brews sitting in the fermenters, and then did 3 consecutive brews, all before I knew there was a problem. Now I'm scared to brew again because I am not entirely sure what...

    Metallic/astringent

I have had the last few batches of brew come out smelling very off after fermentation as well as tasting rather astringent. The beers taste like metal to a degree, and have an astringent dryness on the tongue. There is a smell that is very hard to place, but smells a bit of metal and something...

    should i be concerned?

You should not be concerned at all! You have very active fermentation happening. I would consider getting a blow off tube though and run it from the air lock into a mason jar or container full of water. No sense in calling yourself an idiot. There is much to learn with brewing. Not...

    Ginger Stout problem

I should have specified, I always make yeast starters when my OG is above .05. I think I'll add maybe an oz to the boil, and add the rest to secondary.

    Ginger Stout problem

My thoughts exactly, nice to know I'm not way off. Since ginger is an anti-microbial, do you think it's best to add it post fermentation, or could I add it to the boil for maybe the last 15 instead of 5? I guess my question is, will boiling longer decrease or remove its anti microbial properties?

    please help me go electric.

I agree with Danbass. If you are really looking into upgrading to a 10 gallon electric system, you will need the 220. If you can stack a few breakers, you can get the space to throw in a 30 amp. Of course this is only possible if you're not already maxed out on amps. If not it will be just as...

    Ginger Stout problem

So several people had requested that I brew a beer that was very gingery. So I decided an Oatmeal Stout would be great for this. I added about 5 oz of fresh ginger to the end of the boil hoping this would give great flavor. Here are the problem(s). Fermentation stalled at a very high FG, at...

Wiring Diagram for (2) 5500w wired to (1)PID?

Thanks Kal! you've been a lot of help. I was thinking of going with a contactor coil after the SSR, since I have seen many diagrams using these and I am more familiar with them. Then I could use the switch to cut a leg to the contactor coil. Do you have recommendations for a good contactor...

Wiring Diagram for (2) 5500w wired to (1)PID?

Thank you for the recommendation on the heat sink! that looks like a great option!

Wiring Diagram for (2) 5500w wired to (1)PID?

It was simply for safety purposes. I want to be able to ensure that both legs are killed in case something shorts. Do you see any added benefit to this? I had thought about putting the rocker switches before the SSR's, still debating it. What about using 30 amp DPST switches, one for each...

HERMS with 2 elements at same time or not?

At my current location I will actually only be able to feed 50-60amps into my brew set up. My MT and HLT controls will be inside one control box that will be fed off a 50-60amp spa panel. The BK will have it's own control box, powered off this same spa panel. I will only be running one...

HERMS with 2 elements at same time or not?

If it's possible to run more than one element at once, I agree, go for it. I'm sure you'll thank yourself later on! I am in the works of drawing up a diagram that has (4) 5500W elements, all to be run at once. Do you happen to have a wiring diagram for how you made this work? Or pictures of...

Wiring Diagram for (2) 5500w wired to (1)PID?

The cpu I have is an old style that has a set of clips, that could be modified. But just typing up my plans of drilling and adapting them seems like more of a hassle than its worth. Im all about saving money, but I think i'll go with one already made! Thanks for the advice! I will still...

    Protein Rest plus Decoction

I have had my mash look like that before, It's never been an issue. What was your efficiency? If your efficiency was good, I'd say nothing to worry about.

    Burner upgrade question

Are the welds in good condition? If so, I think you'll be fine. How many Btu's are you pushing with that? I have a 20psi version of that burner and it throws around 185k btus, same looking stand and it's held up very well with 10-15 gallon batches

Wiring Diagram for (2) 5500w wired to (1)PID?

Is there a heat sink that you would recommend for that? I was planning on using an old cpu heat sink that has a cooling fan attached to it. I would imagine this would be sufficient, what are your thoughts?

Wiring Diagram for (2) 5500w wired to (1)PID?

Do you think it would be better to go off a diagram such as this one since I will be drawing so much power at once? I would use the second PID for the pump control. http://www.pjmuth.org/beerstuff/images/Auberin-wiring1-a11a-SWA-2451-5500w.jpg

Wiring Diagram for (2) 5500w wired to (1)PID?

So I have found a diagram that I believe I can use to base my plans off of for at least controlling the HLT elements ( adding a PID for the MT and pump should be easy) I will be powering the control box off a 60amp spa panel, so I will have adequate amperage coming into the box. Here is my...

304 Stainless Drums, Ok for Kettle?

I thought it would be ok, but I just wanted to be sure before going out and purchasing them. Do you happen do know if there is any type of concern regarding the bottom of these drums, since they are crimped together with a silicon gasket?

304 Stainless Drums, Ok for Kettle?

I have recently found a place that I can get 55 gallon 304 stainless steel drums that were previously used for Maple Syrup, and they are very cheap. I know this question has probably been asked many times, but I could not find an answer when searching the forum, so here it goes. Can I use...
