    How long do kits last

Just did my Northern Brewers Bavarian Hefeweizen a couple weeks ago after purchasing it back in August 2012. Everything was fine except had to replace the Wyeast pack. The fermentables were fine though.

Too much water in blowoff rig?

Not sure what the exact circumstances were, but it would take a great deal of resistance to stop bubbles from being released from a blowoff rig (given normal activity after 36 hrs after pitching). What type of primary fermenter were you using? Most likely gases found an easier path to escape and...

A comprehensive list of starting equipment?

People actually buy empty beer bottles to use? Seems like the biggest waste of money you could do while homebrewing.

how will this mess up turn out?

Not sure how great the second calibration method is since it has no mention of elevation corrections. 1000' ASL results in about 2 deg lower boiling temp.

Norther Brewers Bavarian Hefe carb question

Just bottled NB's Hefe and was extremely please with how great is tasted and smelled already after two weeks primary. For some reason I just went by NB's recipe instructions where priming called for 2/3 cup dextrose. I normally check with a calculator of some kind and go by that, but it just...

Fell asleep while wort was chilling

If you are in a pinch you could use the tube your hydrometer came in (most I have seen have a clear plastic container tube).

    Soldering Copper

Really glad I made a DIY chiller. Very easy, came in under $40, and made it out of copper. Planning on using it Sunday.

    Soldering Copper

Thanks for the input guys, decided I would cut my 50' coil in half and sell the other 25' to a buddy. Coiled it around a paint can last night and got a great looking coil. Now I will make some calls to see if anyone I know has a tool to bend it 90 deg. Only supprise so far was how expensive...

    Soldering Copper

Saw a good deal at a local Home Depot for 20' sections of 3/8" copper pipe. What is the possible downside to soldering the two 20' sections together and using that? Do I really need to do a 40' immersion cooler or would 20' work fine for 5 gal batches? Most of the smaller ones I have seen start...

    Electrical Help for Stir Plate

Hello all, just got done a few days ago with my DIY PC fan stir plate. I have it working, but it seems a little underwhelming power wise and I need some advise on the potentiometer and rocker switched I used. I used a 12v pc fan, a 9v DC outlet which I have read work and feel confident about...

Advice for next all extract brew

I made the Wheat Mr Beer a few months ago. For the 2 gal batch I added around 1 orange zest from a fresh orange, and about 1/2 oz (tablespoon) of crushed coriander. It tasted alright. The citrus flavor was pretty good, but the beer stayed a little sweet I though (I think that has to do with the...

    Northern's Dry Irish Stout Kit

Going to order Northern's Dry Irish Stout extract kit in the next few days and am trying to decide on the yeast. You can get S-04 Ale Yeast (dry) for about $3, or Wyeast 1084 Irsih Ale (liquid) for about $6. Like to make a yeast starter so I am leaning towards the Wyeast. Anyone have...
