Building a Brew Rig - Black Pipe?

First, thanks for all of your responses. I wasn't sure if Black Pipe was a good option, but I have so much of it on hand, I figured I might be able to re-purpose it. Second, what is Unistrut, and where can I get it?

Building a Brew Rig - Black Pipe?

Hey all, I'm in the process of building a horizontal brew rig, and was wondering if anyone has tried using plumbing black pipe as a frame? I thought it might be easy to assemble something if I could get 5-foot sections with threaded ends, and do it all without any welding. I was also thinking...

    Minimum Equipment needed for kegging?

I appreciate all the quick responses. I just need to figure out if it's cheaper to have it shipped, or to pick it up in the local store with the additional keg. Thanks.

    Minimum Equipment needed for kegging?

My birthday is coming up soon, and I need to give my wife a wishlist. I want to start kegging, but I need to be pretty specific to tell her what I need. My local HBS offers this, look at the bottom of the page: http://www.maltose.com/Construction/Beer_Making.html I'd ask for the 5lb CO2, and...

    Fly Sparge DIY Pics?

Thanks Guys. I know the Auto-siphon isn't the best idea, but it works well for what I've got. I'm not looking to spray the grains, but since the auto-siphon has such low pressure it works well to trickle the water in. I'm using a 60 qt Polarware kettle with a false bottom and drain, so it's...

Etching the inside of a brew kettle.

I've actually made marking on my mash paddle to measure the volume in my brew kettle. I just turn down the heat for a second to calm the boil, dip it in, and take the reading. You'd think the people who make these kettles would have thought of adding volume marks.

    Fly Sparge DIY Pics?

I've done my second All Grain now, and I want to try rigging up a better sparge system. Currently, I've been getting my sparge H2O up to temp, and then using my auto-siphon to rinse the grains. It's nice low-pressure, but it's too manual for such a long sparge. I'm thinking about rigging up...

Primary Vessel for 10 Gallon Batches

Hi all. I'm planning to increase production and start doing 10 Gallon All-grain batches. Can anyone tell me how big a Primary I should use? I'm guessing a 13 or 14 gallon vessel should be big enough to allow for fermentation activity, but was hoping someone had a pretty definitive answer...

    Secondary, 3 Weeks in Bottles!?!?

A secondary is another vessel (carboy or bucket) to rack your beer to, so that it can clear and continue to develop. And yes, you should bottle condition your beer AT LEAST 3 weeks, if not 4 or 5. You'll be glad you did.

    Business Idea Question

Thank you all for your replies, especially drouillp. It is certainly wiki worthy, and you've given me, and maybe everyone, some things to consider. It sounds like maybe drouillp has looked into this, which was what my original post was asking, and boy howdy, does everyone have an opinion...

    Business Idea Question

First, I have received booze as a gift at a wedding. It's not that uncommon. Given that its a wedding, Uncle Al wouldn't have any problem getting a drink from the open bar, let alone the 1 bottle he's getting as a gift. Second, maybe the wedding example was a bad one to start with, but when it...

    Business Idea Question

Boy, it sounds like I hit on an interesting topic. I appreciate the tips. Getting my beer into a bar or a liquor store isn't the goal, at least initially. I think it's a simple business plan, based on owning the brewing equipment. That means no investment necessary for startup. What I'm...

    Business Idea Question

I'm in Connecticut. I figured the answer would be based on local laws, but I was just wondering if anyone has done the research. (So I won't have to!) As far as profitability goes, I think there's definitely a possibility. Think about it: You could use your current equipment (no cost), and...

    Business Idea Question

Has anyone looked into what it takes to sell your homebrew? I had an idea to set up a small business based on brewing small-batch specialty beers, for special occasions. It would be like wedding favors, or milestone birthday parties, where they wanted something unique to serve. It would...

    Bottling Buckets vs. Carboy

I've been brewing for a little over a year now. I've done 8 different beers, and they've all tasted great, no problems with off-flavors or contamination. I also only use bottling buckets for my primary and secondary fermentation. Is there a reason I should get a carboy? Is there something...

    Not enough Carbonation?

What if there's still little carbonation after almost 4 weeks? I have a Hefeweizen that I bottled in Mid-May, and it was kinda flat at the 2 and 3 week marks. I'm worried that when I moved it to the Secondary there wasn't enough yeast left in suspension during bottling. That would mean that...
