Aging beer: Facts, myths, and discussion

Good to hear. One of these is a Wee Heavy aged in one of my club's barrels for 4 months, the other is a non-barrel aged wheatwine (that I'm trading one case with one of the club's brewers who has theirs in the barrel). Guess it gets to live in my closet for a while!

Aging beer: Facts, myths, and discussion

Just went through a spat of bottling BIG (11% and up) beers from my club's barrel aging program. Problem is, I don't have the cooler space to keep all the bottles. Wondering if they will do OK staying in the 70* air conditioned house for a year...

What I did for beer today

Bottled up a 13.25% Wee Heavy brewed as part of my club's barrel project. Aged 4 months in a fresh Buffalo Trace Single Malt barrel. 46 Scottsmen On Parade!

You know you're a home brewer when?

You know you are a homebrewer when you have to remind people that, in addition to kegs and kegs of beer stocked up for the apocalypse, you are also not impacted by the resulting ammunition shortage.

    CO2

Some people get attached to their shiny new aluminum CO2 tank. Not me. I've always swapped my tank when it was empty. Sometimes the tank is prettier than other times, but it's always in hydro, and if it goes out, the welding supply shop will swap an out of hydro cylinder that has their...

the BJCP so called certification drives me crazy

The competitions that I've stewarded (I fully recognize that I don't have the palate to judge beers, and am perfectly OK with getting to drink all the same beers without having to work at describing them) usually have that rule... for the most part it's been a 5-point spread. Still, I was a...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Putting together a great big old wheatwine, then salvaging a belgian wit from the second runnings (plus a little sumtin sumtin to cap off the mash, another half lb of mela and 2-3 lbs of pils).

    Tilt Hydrometer

It's far more likely that you have some yeast stuck on your Tilt causing it to float a little different, throwing off your gravity readings. If you aren't ready to take the beer out of the fermenter, then let it ride. If you are worried, go ahead and take a hydrometer sample and see what's...

    Reflectix insulation and neoprene jackets

I made jackets for my HLT and MLT out of moving blankets. I do not remove the one around the HLT while heating liquids. I use 5500w ripple elements. I did not make one for the boil kettle because 1) response time / heat retention isn't as important and 2) didn't want to have a nasty gummy...

    What are you drinking now?

Light American Lager... pilsner and rice. Used it to build up enough w-34/70 yeast for other beers. Turned out pretty good!

What I did for beer today

Brewed a Marzen... Putting in my last effort for 2019... 11 gallons of Märzen to go on top of the yeast cake from a Baltic Porter. Making the water... I got a RO system for x-mas. Getting 11ppm from my 450ppm well water. Cant' beat that! Modification to the element to support whirlpool...
