    Efficiency

My first PM was 60% and it was done in a 2 gallon cooler with a grain bag. The main reason it was that low was that I didn't use enough sparge water and so didn't collect all the sugars I probably could have. I will be doing another PM soon with a new 3 gallon converted cooler and hope to...

    starter question

Well mine fortunately wasn't bad. I didn't wash it nearly like you did. Still had some hops smell and very diluted "beer" above it. I made a starter and hope to see some action in it today as I plan on brewing up the Dead Guy clone tomorrow night!

    Grains that don't require mashing

Try steeping your steeping grains in the sparge water. I was told it will only make you lose a few gravity points but the flavor will remain. This is what I plan on doing when I have too many grains for partial mashes.

    starter question

I just checked (as the quart size jar has gradations) - there is 100ml of yeast cake. I hope mine didn't go bad! I will check tomorrow when I make the starter.

    starter question

I have never made a starter before and tomorrow will be my first time. I don't have all the right equipment for it (flask for the airlock) so I will use a jar and just cover with plastic wrap or something. However, I have a question (after reading several posts and websites on starters.) The...

No roasted barley. Caramunich and Crystal 120L with some 2-row to steep.

    Austin Homebrew Red Ale Kits

I brewed the Irish Red Ale in December and drinking it now. It is very good. It was my first extract and specialty grains recipe. The color isn't as red as I thought it would be, but it does have a dark red hue. Some whom I have given it too thought it was a bit hoppy, but I don't think so...

    Glacier hops substitute?

    scott--where the aliens crash!

    Glacier hops substitute?

I was curious, is there a hop similar to glacier that can be used as a substitute? BYO doesn't even list glacier (unless it goes by another name.)

    3 gallon coolers?

This is what I was trying to say: Walmart, Target, Home Depot nor Ace has the 3 gallon. I can't find it locally. The issue is which one (shorter and wider as opposed to taller and skinner) should I buy?

    3 gallon coolers?

I am going to be buying a 3 gallon cooler for Partial Mashing. Unfortunately, there are only 2 and 5 gallon sold locally. My question is more on the shape and size. What I can find is shorter, larger diameter Igloo coolers and taller Gott Rubbermaid coolers. While Palmer says something about...

My Black Ale Came Out Brown?

Do you happen to have the hops schedule? I would love to brew this, and I want to do a partial mash. AHS only gives you about 3.5 lbs for a partial mash, but I soon will be able to do 6 pounds. One thing that surprises is me is how small of a grain bill that is. If I remember correctly, the...

First partial mash and some questions

I took the plunge on my 5th brew and tried a partial mash. Actually, I did a lot of new things, the first being making my own recipe. I also used dried malt extract for the first time. Needless to say it was fun, even with a less than perfect setup. Here is the recipe for 5 gallons: 3.25...

    Partial Mash and Steeping

If the point of partial mashes is to get better beer, why not try to utilize the mash to the maximum possible? I haven't done a PM brew before, so maybe I am off the wall, but I guess I don't see the harm in steeping the crystal 40L while heating up the mash water. You have to heat it anyway...

    Partial Mash and Steeping

Hmmmm, I was hoping I would at least be able to get 70% efficiency. That would mean more than 1/2 lb. of DME. While not a tremendous amount of savings, over time it can add up. Hey, we still cut coupons to save 50 cents! What I need to know is if the water chemistry changes drastically (via...

one bump....no one has any opinion on this?

    Partial Mash and Steeping

I am going to do a partial mash, yet can only do 4lbs. of grain at a time. Part of the grain bill is 1 lb. of crystal 40L. Since crystal 40L needs only be steeped, could it be possible to steep, say, the sparge water with the Crystal 40L so as to be able to throw in another pound of grains...

    Is this an APA?

What kind of IBU's will that give me? Thanks!

    Is this an APA?

Just need to know if this recipe is an American Pale Ale (partial mash:) 3.5 lbs. Extra Light DME 3.5 lbs. 2-row 1.0 lb. Crystal 40L 1/2 oz. Centennial (60min) 1/2 oz. Amarillo (15min) 1/2 oz. Simcoe (15min) 1/2 oz. Amarillo (5min) 1/2 oz. Simcoe (5min) I think the hops might be a...
