What I Learned From My 1st Brew

I take copious notes for my brewdays, I also don't crack into a beer untill I'm running the wort chiller, too many brewdays have gone sideways because of a few too many high ABV beverages. Keep at it and learn the craft, ask questions if a search here doesn't give you what you are seeking. A...

    Who Does HBT at Work?

I pop in when I take a break, there is no issue with, and I'm on my own personal computer anyway. Being a mechanic means if there aren't cars in my bays I get to do as I please because I get paid flat rate book time to fix cars, if I'm not working on something I'm literally not getting paid, let...

One more guy going pro - Man Skirt Brewing

Hey Joe, I hear you on the delays! I've got a building that needs a ton of work, new roof, expand the cellar, shore up the floor in a spot, pore concrete for the equipment pad... Neverending!!!!

    Legends in Brewing: Charlie Papazian

This man is truely inspirational, to read this interview gave me a feel for what he is made of, and that inspires me to keep doing what I have strived to do when I first got started, to have fun, and to keep pushing the limits of what we know about great beer. Now to see about some pie.....

Craft the Perfect Draft Quick Disconnects

I use those same discos, I dremeled out the cross bars on mine to prevent wayward ook from hanging on them, also before brewday I apply a film of food grade lube I use for my keg o-rings to keep things popping on and off smoothly!

    Low bucks motorized grain mill

A car seat motor...... Brilliant!! They have enough torque to move fat people in their seats, I imagine they have enough torque for a mill. And I can get plenty of them from work, I have replaced several seat frames recently because of occupancy sensor failures.

Looking to rebound on my 2nd AG batch

Beers turn out differently depending on the mash ratio, 1:1 will be different than say 1.33:1, or 1.5:1 it's subtle but it is detectable. That said I follow my recipes exactly with one change, I split the batch sparge into two seperate sparges, I stir with each sparge and let it sit for 10-15...

Dark Mild Reaper's Mild, 1st place 2011 HBT Competition

Boiling alcohol on an electric burner will net you a 173 degree set point to calibrate to and is the closest to mash temps I can think of at the moment.

    Saison Cottage House Saison

Agreed!! I have enough Munich malts on hand to be able to brew eight 5 gallon Munich SMaSH batches with an OG of 1.050 Why stop at one sack? Get a sack of dark Munich, and a sack of run of the mill Munich, then snap up 10 lbs of caramunich just to be sure....

    Saison Cottage House Saison

The two row should be a fine substitute, as for the colour of the c-70 it should be close, but would you be able to get hold of some regular Munich? Or dark Munich? I feel every beer deserves some Munich in it, it's magical stuff.

Craft The Perfect Draft Pump Up Your Brewday

I had a stuck pump about 8 brews in on my chugger, I dismantled it and indeed some wort gummed it up. Haven't given it much thought but I really need to get in the habit of a post brew day maintenance cleaning, clean pumps are happy pumps...

Can you Brew It recipe for Stone Arrogant Bastard

This thread is endlessly inspiring... The sheer volume of posts all focused on this one beer... It has spawned so many ideas in my head that I have applied to other recipes.

Has anyone ever fermented in a food grade barrel like this?

This is interesting, I'm looking into a few wee test fermenters around a bbl each, and these look perfect for test batches!

Dear wrench, Why did you pop off that overly tight-rusted in place oxygen sensor causing me to slam my hand into the rusty, jagged heat shields??? My hand now looks like I punched a running blender blade. Sincerely, A poor craftsman often blames his tools. PS.... Glad it's not my ******* hand!

    Saison Cottage House Saison

Ive brewed this when out of Pilsner malt and used basic 2-row, boiled for an hour, I couldn't honestly tell the difference between the 2-row and the pils. Later I brewed it with pils but spaced out I guess and boiled for an hour.... Again I t tasted the same to me! Modern pils malt is well...

Budweiser Admits Craft Beer is for Real

This is a thought I have been knocking around in my head for some time, that yellow fizz is seeing the truth, people are going back to Americas beer roots... Craft beer, brewed by local breweries. Sure there are many beer drinkers who are all about their BMC but as noted in the article fewer and...
