    First year hops

N00b here, Got my rhizomes into the ground a little over three weeks ago. Soil is amended and I water it each morning. None of them have broke ground yet, so I move the dirt out of the way and two of them haven't done a single thing. One of them is sending up little bean sprout looking...

Show off your 2012 Hops garden!

This thread got me nervous my rhizomes were duds. Went out, moved around the dirt mound to find shoots coming up! They are about a half inch to an inch deep still, but I hope they start poking within the week!!

Want to take keg on a trip, need input

Short story out of a long one, I am going on a camping trip and want to bring kegged homebrew. I have not the capacity to bring gas and a regulator. If I force carb, how long will I expect to see a 5gal corny last without gas-in hooked up? Will I still be able to dispense out of the...

Very, very dark "pale" ale. . . recipe critique?

Hey all, I brewed (attempted) a pale ale today and came out with incredibly dark wort. It looks much like a barleywine to be honest. Here is my recipe OG: 1.077 Mash temp: 157 @ 60min 11.13# 2-row .5# Belgian aromatic .5# Cara-pils .5# Crystal-60L .75oz Columbus - 20min...

Took my first gravity reading since brew day and it came out at 1.031. We are shooting for 1.028 so we are almost there. I did want to inquire about the coffee. V@S is a very coffee-forward beer. I have heard mixed things regarding inoculation of the coffee (racking into secondary, later during...

Taking a stab at this right now. Went up to 12# maris otter and 3# honey malt. 5oz of choc malt. Going to add 1# of honey instead of 2 since I have honey malt already.

similar boat here. i did a sweet stout and went 7 days with a split bean, and it was delicate in flavor. i think with the mellow sweetness of the sweet stout taken into consideration, the V@S might earn two beans

We just pitched a vial white labs burton yeast and its still going nuts. Brewed on Monday, ferm started Tuesday, and the blowoff tube is still spitting out foam. Im taking that as a good sign the attenuation is high

1st all grain brew, slowest sparge ever!

Not as substantial as you'd think. The pipe is only about 1/2" thick, and the slits were cut pretty deep, some of them almost halfway thru the pipe where I was negligent. When I dump the grains I only lose about a cup of wort.

Presidents Day, a cohort and I took our chances with a V@S clone. We formulated a basic grain bill/hop schedule consisting of: 16# Marris Otter 1# Crystal 40L 2# Chocolate Malt .25# Black Patent and 1.25oz Nor' Brewer @ 60min 1.25oz Nor' Brewer @ 15min 1.25oz Mt. Hood @ 5min...

1st all grain brew, slowest sparge ever!

I recently constructed a manifold out of copper tubing. I cut slits in it every 1/4". First use of it i wrapped it inside of a grainbag with the slits facing up. Great drainage rate, then the second batch with it, I did not use a grainbag and pointed the slits downwards. Way slow. Slits facing...

Whats everyones final gravity? My OG was 1.055. It has been in ferm for 10 days with moderate activity for the first 48 hours. Since then, my gravity readings have consistently read in at 1.030.
