Stuck sparges shouldn't scare ya too much...I had 2 on my first two AG batches. I was able to clear them by blowing into the drain tube and letting the bed settle again. I started out the sparge too quickly...since then I start sloooooowly until the bed is good and settled...no problems since...

That's also what I did after researching and getting advice from some here and elsewhere. So far (3 batches) it's working well.

Nice setup...do you have plans or materials list? I like the idea of folding it up to store when not using it. Space is at a premium in the garage!

I did a 5 gallon using the original instructions using an orange igloo cooler. You may have to use more/less SS washers to get a good seal and be able to open the valve fully (I've read a lot of the posts and it seems that some coolers may differ in wall thickness depending on the brand and age...

I agree that you'll have much higher loss to evaporation if you boil in a larger pot, especially in MN! I had a similar issue with some of my 1st partial boils not being as hoppy as I'd hoped. Be patient...it was better with age! I recently switched to a 10 gal pot and have lost 1.5 to 2 gals...

Anyone have a fairly recent profile of city water in Duluth Minnesota (Lake Superior H20)? I've found something on the city website but it's pretty basic. I'll get a sample tested if need be but I thought I'd check in with the brew-a-nistas before shelling out the $$$ (I'm a cheap mutha!).
