    Fermenting Bucket Smells Like Hops

Only used a soft rag and the no rinse cleanser. Nothing rough!

    My first batch

That's what I've heard! Mid January can't come soon enough!

    Cheap means of cooling wort

I just put it in the snow for 10 minutes then an ice/snow/water bath in the sink for 15. i actually got it too cold...it's 60 so now I have to wait for it to warm up. Best thing about this method...The ice cost me about a nickle, the snow was free and the water maybe another nickle. So $0.10...

New brew same boil...or no boil.

Yeah, I know. As I said, when i prepped everything I was supposed to have a turkey fryer here shortly. That fell through and the yeast was already smacked and fully expanded, the grains in the muslin bag etc. I wasn't excited or anything, I swear... :cross: Next one will be better.

New brew same boil...or no boil.

Here's an interesting fact...Once I added the second hops at around 205 it created a nice layer of hops on the top of the wort which trapped the heat I guess. I have a nice rolling boil and nearly 220F after adding the third and final Hop.

New brew same boil...or no boil.

I used the lid to get to 205. I took it off and I had those tell-tale signs of water dripping back in (white bubbles around the edges). I don't want to risk ruining the beer.

New brew same boil...or no boil.

I have a glass top stove so i don't have direct access to my burners. I think that's the problem. I think the stove is regulating the temp to prevent the glass top from becoming brittle and breaking and the heat transfer from the element to the glass and the glass to the kettle is killing me...

New brew same boil...or no boil.

Sat at 205 for 30 minutes before I gave up. The first brew smells amazing so here's to hoping it doesn't have any ill effects!

New brew same boil...or no boil.

Repeating the same task exactly as before and expecting different results is insanity, I know. But this time I can measure temp better and can tell you that the best I could do is 205 F on my stove. I was supposed to have a turkey fryer by now but that fell through and since I was already ready...

    Cheap means of cooling wort

I have a 5 gallon kettle and while I have only brewed one batch, it only took me 20 minutes to bring the wort down to 80. I filled my sink about 1/3 of the way with cold water and added ice. I dropped the kettle in the ice bath until the water was warm then moved the kettle to the other side and...

    Fermenting Bucket Smells Like Hops

That's because I thought it was! Apparently it's normal, I'm just afraid of contaminating my next batch.

    Fermenting Bucket Smells Like Hops

Really? I figured it would be a sign that there were still remnants from the prior batch. I'll go with a good soaking in Star San tomorrow before dumping in the wort. Thanks guys!

Worst Commercial Beer You've Ever Had?

Keystone Light. Hands down. But I can't be too critical. That dirty 30 got me through the summer cheap! Then I discovered REAL beer and then I found out that I can make my own real beer! And here I am!

    Fermenting Bucket Smells Like Hops

I scrubbed my fermenting bucket and cleaned it with Easy Clean twice. Even with the scrubbing, soaking, rinsing and repeating the bucket still reeks of hops. How can I get rid of that smell so I can use this thing again? I'm brewing again tomorrow so I kinda need it!

    My first batch

Should note that the bucket was primary and the carboy is secondary.

    My first batch

I just racked out to secondary and here's a couple pictures of my Autumn Amber Ale. I used the Autumn Amber Ale kit from Midwest Supplies. SG at the time of racking was dead nuts 1.012. Three more weeks or so and I'll be tasting. It smells delicious! Just hope my thorough washing of the gear was...

    What to do with trub

That's the route I went. It's already on the garden. I didn't even think about the possibility of reusing until I had already racked the beer off of it. This is more of a "what should I do next time" thread. I'm going to read up on washing it and saving it longer term. Thanks for the heads...

    What to do with trub

I happen to have two or three dozen mason jars with lids and all that jazz that I picked up from my grandmother just before she was put in to a home. I was going to use them for canning veggies from the garden but I think yeast starters are a far better use! If I put the next bit in a mason...

    What to do with trub

I may look in to washing the yeast later on. On my first I'm trying to keep it simple (I really am!). And dstranger99, that is fairly odd but not inappropriate if you love beer that much!

    What to do with trub

I thought about dumping it on the garden. The problem with that today is that the garden is covered with 8" of snow thanks to our little blizzard...Maybe I'll put on my big boy shorts and haul it out there anyways. Thanks!
