When is beer ready to bottle?

After 3 weeks you're probably safe BUT you should use a hydrometer to make sure things have stabilized. (where is revvy with the hot chick with fireams series?) Hydrometers are cheap, using them is cheap insurance that the beer you've now spent weeks and dollars on is ready to go into the...

I hate pissing matches w/ my boss

I had a 'boss' that would look at his watch every morning when I got to work. We were working 60 hrs/wk minimum on pre-funded start up salary. So what if I get to work at 9:15? I was there past 7 and working Saturday too. He lasted three weeks before engineering revolted.

    Mmmm....beer cave.

nice. Is that going to be the set for Saw XII or whatever the hell number they're on now?

    Dark Pilsner. HELP!

Is it black looking at it in your carboy? Pull a sample into your hydrometer test jar and take a peek at the color there.

Rockstar Energy Fridge = Perfect Single Bucket Fermenter!

I wish I could score a couple. Nice. I use the analog Johnson Controls model which I picked up off the bay for $34 shipped. Works great, easy to wire. Any of the commonly used ones around here should work. Yup. Through the bottom? Building a dolly with some casters would be nice I...

the_Wife wants me to buy a bike (advice)

18 if you're lucky :o Laps around a parking lot...my class was a lot of fun. Even if I was on a Honda Wedgie. (Rebel 250 Baby...FEEL THE POWER!)

    Stock pot

I would seriously consider stepping up to the 40 qt for another $15. That should be big enough to handle just about any 5 gal batch you throw at it. But before we go that far down this road, are you sure it's you're pot leaving metallic tastes in your beer? Have a good oxide layer in your...

    Propane

You're not getting it bad. The $17 exchange at Home Depot/Lowes is 15 lbs total with no credit for what is already in the tank  This is why I have three tanks :D Fewer trips to the out of the way refill place.

**PLEASE VOTE!** The Quest for the Ultimate Portable Brewery

Could the steamer bits be converted for a false bottom? Might save a little more money. I'd suggest BiaB instead of the false bottom, but not for 10 gal batches (I think it could be done, but I'm not to where I'd recommend it ;)) I like the siphon starter. I might make a trip by the pet...

    HBT Pilots...MMW, with request

AWESOME! We had a pair of A-10s come in for this weekends air show yesterday afternoon, that was an incredible sight. The military gets all the best toys. :rockin: One of our pro pilots (the plane I fly is a company plane) ran off with 'my' 182 on Monday and parked it at HQ for the week...

Room temperature too hot for brewing

Welcome to HBT, and those are pretty much your options. The only other thing I could mention is the "Son of Fermentation Chiller" but a free/nearly free fridge/freezer on CL is probably the best option.

Me too. WAF was also zero for an IC... Should be what? A week out or so from the first bottles? Or are you kegging?

    No Chill Experiment

I am by no means an expert in brewing, but perhaps more affects chill haze than simply the cold break. Maybe, and I'm speculating here, a good hot break or plenty of time in the fermenter at proper temps has more to do with preventing chill haze than rapid cooling to pitching temps? I'm not...

Mix n Match AG Recipe: What would you do?

That'd be just dandy too :mug:

Mix n Match AG Recipe: What would you do?

I think I'd take the 10# of PA and combine with the 40L (maybe 20L and 60L) and the Cara-Pils for the grain, Hop with Cascade at 60 and 45 and the Williamette over 20, 10, 5, and 0.

    Would you still buy beer?

Even when I get a full pipeline I doubt I'll stop buying commercial beers. There are some things of which I want but just not in 5 (or even 3) gallon quantities. I'll just buy those in limited quantities when the mood strikes. I thought IPA was going to fall in that category, but the more of...

    clarification on fermentation

If you have krausen, the only thing an inactive air lock is telling you is that you didn't get your pail completely sir tight. RDWHAHB, your beer is fine. Give it 10 days and check the gravity :mug: EDIT: Oh, and welcome!
