I bought glass carboys with my first kit, mainly so I could watch the fermentation. Stuff like that just facinates me.

Ah, good point. I wouldn't hassle with one that is smaller than 5 gallons. If it is smaller, go buy yourself one. Maybe find the super cheap Better Bottles at Walmart if you are lucky.

My first kit and ingredients should be on my doorstep when I arrive home today. I'm sure I will be just as entranced as you are. Loving your hobby is a good thing.

I would just use the carboy in your case and forget about secondary fermentation. Leave the beer in the carboy for the full amount of time, rack to bucket, and bottle.

I will keep my first batch in primary for 60 days instead of 30 and see how that turns out. Thanks for the info everyone.

I just built mine two days ago. Works like a charm and only cost $15. Now I just need to the the temperature switch and I'll be good to go.
