    Confession Time

I can confess to doing a night-time run to the supermarket to go dumpster diving for empty beer bottles from the bottle bank rather than buying glass. I'm not proud.. nor was SWMBO who refused point blank to even leave the car even though I tried reasoning with her that her small hands would be...

    "Other" benefits to homebrewing

I don't know what it is about brewing and nature that go so well together.. Am all electric so it's not a case of take the burner outside or die.. Interesting.

    "Other" benefits to homebrewing

I don't think there are many of the above comments I don't agree with.. The whole self sufficiency thing is a pipe dream for me living in UK suburbia. Still..I can have a brew and dream!

    "Other" benefits to homebrewing

+1 on this too "I need to have some sort of hobby to keep me from going nuts. Why not a hobby that results in my other way of relaxing?"

    "Other" benefits to homebrewing

"Saving money compared to buying commercial beer" Yeah.. I always wondered about this one. I don't think I could hand on heart say I've saved money as I spent a few hundred on kit. I've only been brewing 18 months or so, so I'm guessing it'll be a few more months until I'm back in the black...

    "Other" benefits to homebrewing

I always wonder what "other" benefits people get from brewing other than the obvious - drinking beer. For me, it's threefold: a) Working long hours, but generally having weekends free, I like the fact that I always have a beer-related activitity to look forward to. I generally brew...

Hot plug - buffalo water boiler

Thanks all. Great advice. In a rented property so replacing sockets isn't possible. I have managed to find a socket that I can boil my kettle in without too much warming, so I'm going to give it a go, but will check the plug and socket every few mins. Knew I should have gone for gas! Sent...

Hot plug - buffalo water boiler

Hi all, I've just received a 40 ltr 2.6kw buffalo water boiler and did a test boil with it today using 15 litres of water. All went well and I got a good rolling boil within 30 mins. However, when I unplugged it as I switched it off, I noticed that the live and neutral pins of the plug were...

    Priming sugar for small batches

Nice.. Thanks Martin. Incidentally - the question was promoted by my bottling the improved recipe you looked over for me a couple of weeks ago. It tastes awesome so double thanks. *cheers* Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Priming sugar for small batches

I've got a quick one about priming sugar for small batches. I am using 25g brewers sugar (glucose) in about 200ml of water, which I understand needs boiling for 15 mins to sterilise it. My question is this - is it normal for this to go yellow and smell a little caramel-like? I'm worried that as...

    IPA screwup

Was thinking of dry hopping 7g of cascade after a week in the fermenter and leaving in the primary for a couple of weeks after. The only thing stopping me is whether i can get some marbles to keep the dry hop bag down. If I don't do it with this one, I'll certainly do the next!

    IPA screwup

Ahh working out the percentages is a really good idea - I'll definitely do that next time! "Intense" is a good description! haha It's drinkable - I forced a glass down yesterday before bottling and by the end of it tried to convince myself that it wasn't too bad (it kinda was - mmm...

    IPA screwup

re the overpitching - no, I just threw it in there without rehydration. The issue is that I got the 11.5g sachets and brewed two 1 gallon batches in a weekend. I understand it doesn't keep well over a day or two so I just divided it by 2 and chucked it in. Good to know that I need to be more...

    IPA screwup

Thanks for the reply fartinmartin - I just bottled it last night so I will wait a few weeks for the final result. I'm just preparing some teas of all the different grains I used so i can taste them and try and understand the flavours of each grain and in turn work out which one might be the...

    IPA screwup

Hi all, I'm new to the whole brewing thing and got a Brooklyn Brew Shop kit for xmas. I brewed that up and it tasted pretty good. I've tried to emulate the Everyday (US) IPA in a UK 1 gallon batch and it couldnt taste further from the BBS kit. I was bottling it last night and had a glassful -...
