Missed my OG in an Oatmeal Stout - now what?

I ordered it from more beer already milled - so I'm honestly not really sure. May be time to invest in a grain mill soon...

Missed my OG in an Oatmeal Stout - now what?

I'm also trying to figure out where I went wrong. I think my strike water may have been too high - close to 168ish - would that have had a huge impact on the yield?

Missed my OG in an Oatmeal Stout - now what?

Sorry - it was the AG version. Yep - it has plenty of color, but the gravity just isn't there. I'll seal it and throw it in the fridge overnight until I can get the extract tomorrow morning

Missed my OG in an Oatmeal Stout - now what?

Long story short - I did a BIAB with this recipe today - http://www.morebeer.com/products/oatmeal-stout-grain-beer-kit-advanced.html The recipe says you can expect 1.050-1.060 ish or so... I got 1.027... No idea how it hit that low. My last BIAB with the same setup hit right on the money. So...

    Graff (Malty, slightly hopped cider)

Strangest thing... I just switched air locks on a whim and it's magically going to town. Still no krausen and the bubbles are the same, but the airlock is flying all of a sudden. I've looked at the old one and can't find any cracks - really weird.

    Graff (Malty, slightly hopped cider)

Yeah - I've definitely got bubbles forming and moving around and stuff, but it's definitely strange that it's going so "slow" for Notty. The last time I used it in a cider it absolutely ripped through it. I'm halfway tempted to try switching to something else like s-05 if it doesn't finish...

    Graff (Malty, slightly hopped cider)

Yeah - I have quite a bit because I wasn't sure how much krausen I was going to get and wanted to eliminate the chance for a blowoff. So, I've got about 4.5 gallons in a 5G carboy

    Graff (Malty, slightly hopped cider)

So - I brewed this last Sunday exactly as detailed on the first page. Pitched Nottingham that afternoon. 4 days later and there has been absolutely zero krausen and no airlock activity - but a gravity reading has seen it drop from 1.052 to 1.03. Anything I should be concerned about - or just...

    Blue Moon Clone

Have 5 gallons of this going now - can't wait to see how it turns out! It's been fermenting for about 3 days and it actually is starting to smell like blue moon! Also - just stumbled on this... looks like Wayne's story checks out! http://www.millercoorsblog.com/brewing/homebrew-tips/...

Just won $100 at my lhbs - what should I buy?

I'm a fairly new Brewer and have been experimenting with wine, cider and am doing my first biab this weekend. Found out today that I just won a $100 gift card to my lhbs and was curious what I should get. Here's my current equipment: 2 x 7 gallon buckets 4 x 5 gallon better bottles 4 x 1...

    Banana Wine

Really thinking about trying this out this week. Biggest decision is whether I should do a 5G or 1G batch. I'd hate to do a 1 gallon and find out that it's delicious in two years and only have a few bottles ready - but I'm also hesitant to tie up a 5g carboy for that long. So many decisions!

Show us your Mead in a photo!!!

It's still got a little while to go, but my JAOM cleared about a week ago after only a month. It's so pretty! It's gonna be all I can do to hold off on this. Better start another one asap.

Pumpkin Cider - Fermented in a pumpkin

Sorry for the delay in responding - been a crazy week at work. So, I got back on Sunday night and the pumpkin concoction had dropped to 1.034. Left it for two more days hoping it'd get down to 1.02 or a little lower, but it didn't move at all. Racked to a 1 gallon secondary and have been cold...

Pumpkin Cider - Fermented in a pumpkin

1.05 as of this afternoon, so I'm going to let it ride while I'm out of town tonight and tomorrow and hope it doesn't get away from me before I get back. Took another small taste today and I still really like it. Even at room temperature it still had a pretty solid body to it. Hoping I come...

Pumpkin Cider - Fermented in a pumpkin

Update: 24 hours after pitching, and fermentation is going fast and furious. OG was 1.079, and already down to 1.054. Hydrometer sample was delicious, and best of all, had a very good mouth feel - something I think has been lacking in my ciders so far. Looks like all that pumpkin meat is...

Pumpkin Cider - Fermented in a pumpkin

That's an awesome idea! How cool would it be to show up to a Halloween party with a pumpkin cider being served out of a pumpkin?? If the tap or spigot didn't work, you could always just keep it cool and ladle it out like a punch bowl...Although, I think I'd probably want to clean out way...

Pumpkin Cider - Fermented in a pumpkin

I basically just put the lid of the pumpkin back on. It isn't air tight, but it's tight enough to keep bugs out - and since I'm only keeping it in the pumpkin for primary, the c02 from the fermentation should push the oxygen out. I thought about sealing it with wax and then drilling a hole for...
