    Mistakes

Happy birthday! I have nothing useful to add as my first batch has just hit 7 days in primary. :D

    Northern's Black IPA kit...

Awesome! I think that seals it for my second brew. :)

What I did for beer today

I got up this morning and looked longingly at my first batch sitting in the fermenter....day 6. I'm trying not to pry it open to test it until day 14 but we will see how patient I am.

    Northern's Black IPA kit...

Has anyone tried this one? I'm considering doing it for my second batch and wonder if it has turned out well for anyone else. I LOVE Mountain Standard but I don't hold any illusions I can get there from a kit :) thanks! Kate

    1st brew

Ha! Nice. My kit came with the fermenting bucket and a bottling bucket but only one lid. So I may be patient enough to last another week before buying another bucket ;) We will have to see. I'm shopping for my next kit...thinking the Northern Black IPA.

Nice! What are you doing next?

    1st brew

I'm using the Midwest Amber Ale kit....it was a dry yeast. I hydrated per the instructions. I'll bring them temp down to 68* when I get home tonight and leave it that way while I'm gone over the weekend. Thanks!

    1st brew

Too late :) it was 72* this morning, a bubble every other second or so in the airlock. I would pick a balls hot week to do this and my AC bill is going to be higher than I would like this month - but I hope it will be well worth it. Kate

My first Q! Ice as top off water...

Ooh...I like your idea. I really want to play it safe my first time around but I also think this may be one of the more efficient ways I can cool my wort.

My first Q! Ice as top off water...

So I just took delivery of my kit and I have tomorrow evening blocked off to do my first extract kit. I've read so much information that I feel pretty good about diving in. However, I've read that the top off water should be sanitized but in my instructions it says that I can use Ice as top...

    New girl from Chicago

Thanks guys! Yep, I am doing an extract kit. I've read How to Brew and Joy of Homebrewing. Those books plus everything I've read here has pretty well prepared me for the whole...."be patient, don't worry, it'll be beer" aspect of it. And what is this Chicago Group buy??? I am intrigued!

    New girl from Chicago

I'm still even waiting for my kit to be delivered :( But I'm reading everything I can before hand because I know the second that bad boy comes in I'm going to dive in!! I was able to snag the Midwest Groupon and will be starting with an Autumn Amber. Weee!

    Racked into secondary too early

    Ooooh....that's awesome!

    Racked into secondary too early

Newbie question but those bourbon oak chips sound amazing. How would you sanitize those for use in the secondary? Or would you? Is soaking it in the bourbon enough? Thanks!
