    What is a "heavy" beer?

i know lots of people who aren't (big?) fans of Guinness or any very dark beer claim that they are super heavy beer, and say things like "i can drink one but thats it, it fills me up" but i think people equate color with "heaviness" and i cant see how this is relevant at all. wouldnt the...

Pet Peeve, 5 vs 6 gallon question from a Canadian

ESPECIALLY the US... the thing is, is that American scientists use it almost always in their labs because it is simply a better system... but i do understand how it is hard to change, it can take generations... here in Canada I still understand pounds better than kilograms (i have no idea what i...

    Heinous low FG

okay thanks, yeah on closer inspection of my hydrometer, its looks like there is some water inside of it... i guess i could have figured this all out by myself without posting. but i cannot see any cracks or anything in it, it is just a very small amount of water inside... i guess this makes it...

    Heinous low FG

all right never mind i think i was wrong, i had checked the hydrometer for correct readings before but it now is giving me very very low readings... (by had checked i mean like 6 or 7 weeks ago) ... i guess now my question is, how did it all of a sudden quit working properly? does using...

    Heinous low FG

yes i have checked checked my hydrometer in water and it is bang on 1.000, temp at time of reading is about 17C but that difference would be negligible. i made the reading after 4 days in primary and then again on bottling day, 0.995 and 0.990 respectively... the readings have to be right, i...

    Heinous low FG

I just bottled a kit from the Brew House called winterfest ale and it had an OG of 1.046, on bottling day FG was 0.990 for an alc% of about 7.2%... i've never heard of anyone getting a FG below 1.000, have you? do you think it will be possible to taste the 'thinness'?

Pet Peeve, 5 vs 6 gallon question from a Canadian

this failed only in the US, im pretty sure that basically the entire rest of the world uses the metric system, here in Canada we still hear lots of imperial units just because we are so "Americanized" in terms of our culture that is... so it does get confusing/annoying in the home brewing world...

Pet Peeve, 5 vs 6 gallon question from a Canadian

    Finishing Gravity pretty low.

he forgot to take the OG reading, but if it is that high now, are you sure fermentation even occurred? is there lots of gunk around the edges?

    Buying Online in Canada

yeah i've been to the paddockwood brewery before, just to buy their beer though (which is very good by the way)... i'll have to go there to get grains then... online shopping in canada is awful

    Finishing Gravity pretty low.

finishing gravity of 1.032 is not low, its very high... are you sure the FG from the kit expected 1.042, thats very high

    Buying Online in Canada

-homebrew-supplies.ca is very expensive as it is, plus there shipping is $17 + min -morebeer.com charges the usps shipping rates to canada, which for an 11 lb kit is well over $30 in shipping - mashing heads looks like they have good prices, but their selection of extracts is basically...

    Buying Online in Canada

I've looked all over the place for a place to buy ingredients online that will ship to canada for a reasonable price. The US websites like morebeer.com have to charge insane shipping rates to ship to me and it would not even be worth it for me. Is anyone else from canada here who buys online? Im...

    Background taste in extract kits

no i never filter my tap water, just because i think the water here is pretty good. can tap water, even if it is good, cause obvious off tastes? and yes i use the yeast that comes with the kits. how long are you supposed to boil the extract for? or what is your boiling process when using an...

    Background taste in extract kits

yeah i know, i wish i could give a more accurate description of the taste. i hear about a "yeasty" flavour and a "malty" flavour. How am i supposed to know if thats what i am tasting?

    Background taste in extract kits

I have made 4 different kits out of a can with the syrup-like extract, all of different brands (Morgans Yukon Smoked Brown Ale, Muntons Anniversary Ale, Black Rock Bitter, & Coopers Dark Ale) and while they all taste different, they all have a very similar background taste that is clear in all...

    Primary with or without airlock?

at my local home brewing supply stores they all recommend that i use a primary with no airlock and just put the lid on top and let it ferment for the first 4-7 days in there and then transfer it to the carboy. but lots of places i read say to have a primary with a hole in the lid and put the...
