American IPA The New West Coast IPA

Brewed this exact recipe a month ago, turned out fantastic! Everyone loves it. Been making hazies for awhile, it was nice to be able to keep it simple on brew day. Anyone else thinking about different hop varieties that would play nice with this style? I wouldn't mind some classic C hop...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Since you have a 2" valve after the site glass, I would dump yeast with the site glass attached. As long as you are pushing CO2 through the top gas manifold you should have positive pressure reducing/eliminating O2 intake. If you take the site glass off you'll want to make sure to purge it...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

    - Mash pH 5.2 at "room temp" I try to measure at the same temp every time, 65F. - Usually ~6mls of Phosphoric Acid 85% - Tap water for now, but looking to switch to RO I take my pH a few times during the brew day, trying to hit ~4.8-4.9 into the fermenter. To do this, I take a pH reading with...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Looks great! What % of malted oats did you end up going with? I've been around 20-25% and I with a spelt addition of 5-10%.

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Snagged a 20ml container of Citra and Mosaic incognito from YVH. Looking forward to brewing with these in the very near future, I'll be sure to update this thread when I do. Anyone else grab some? Good call, the shipping was a bit high. I paid around $11 for the pair. This sounds awesome...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

This is very similar to my process and I have to agree, it works really well. I dump once after soft crashing at 55 F for 48 hours, dry hop at 55 F for another 24 hours then start my cold crash. I then dump one more time before kegging. With this method I experience no hop burn and get a full...

That must have been so much fun brewing on a 12bbl system! Congrats, thats so cool they asked you to help design their flagship.

Good call! I like the sight glass no elbow idea. I might combine that with what BoilerInSoCal said. Great idea! I think I might try that on my next brew!

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

I have a spike CF5, my process is pretty similar to what others have said.... I soft crash at 55F wait 24hrs, dump yeast, dry hop #1 at 55F, gently rock fermenter, wait 24hrs, dump dh #1, dry hop #2, gently rock fermenter, wait 24hrs, dump dh #2, crash to 35F for 48hrs, dump hops and keg. I...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

After seeing several people switch these two ports I decided to give it a try on my last batch. Happy to report, this worked really well! No more clogs, clean samples and like someone else said (can't find the post), due to the angle the thermowell is in when in the sample port its not far off...

    Spike Complete System

I'm with ya on this one, I had horrible efficiency problems when brewing 5 gal batches of high adjunct hazy recipes. The higher the adjunct the lower the efficiency. I remember doing a 30% (oat/wheat) recipe and got around 60% efficiency. That was for a 5gal batch, if I doubled that grain...

Tell me about your fly sparge

Have you settled on a mash thickness you prefer? I assume you use adjust thickness depending on the styles/grain bill. Just out of curiosity, what would you use for a 6% ipa vs a heavy oat stout around 9%. Most of the time I've been using 1.25-1.33 based on recommendations from Spike. Same...

Tell me about your fly sparge

Can confirm, this was happening to me and it was a nightmare. Most notably when making hazy IPAs where my grain bill was 20-30% oat/wheat adjuncts. I was seeing mash efficiencies in the low 50s!!! I wanted to sell my brand new Spike 3V 15gal system and go back to my igloo coolers where I...

Dry Hopping In Conical and Pressure Transfer

That's awesome! Sounds like a fun place to work! I love when i can share my beer.

Dry Hopping In Conical and Pressure Transfer

For me, it's all about taste over quantity. So, if i lose some beer to make it tastier and ready quicker, I'm ok with it. Spike's CF5 has markings up to 6 gallons and i usually fill to that line. After all of the dumps during my cold crash and the beer that sits below the racking arm after...

    @bailey mountain brewer, that's a great point!

Dry Hopping In Conical and Pressure Transfer

That stinks, sorry to hear that. Are you dumping sediment each day of the cold crash? I also noticed that I need it to be really cold. The colder the better, if I'm cold crashing at 40 I may even let it sit 7 days. Let us know how the filter works out.

Dry Hopping In Conical and Pressure Transfer

I never really have an issue with clogs when I pressure transfer my heavily hopped NEIPAs from my Spike CF5 to a keg. Below is the process I use that works for me. I know everyone has different setups so the below steps may not be possible for everyone. After fermentation is complete, I drop...
