    Burners???

I just got a 50 qt. turkey fryer with basket and LP burner from Sam's Club online - total $116.14 incl tax/shipping. Aluminum pot quality acceptable, but haven't tried the burner yet. Just getting into BIAB and didn't want to spend too much $$$ yet until I knew it'll be worth it.

    Fermentation Temperatures

I’ve avoided brewing this summer because my house temp is set at 80º-82ºF, to save on a/c $$$, and my basement is only in the mid-70’s. Decided to try setting the fermenter in a tub of ice water – am impressed how well it’s working. Started an IPA yesterday. Set the...

    fermenting beer attracts roaches...

Get some boric acid powder at the drugstore, it's cheap, sprinkle small amount around the area where the roaches feed or congregate (under sink, where trash stored til pickup, in your case, around the fermenter). Will kill the roaches within a few hours, and they will track it back to their...

safe to use home-grown hops in dry-hop

think about it. These home grown hops have been out in an unhealthy environment, exposed to all manner of air-born pollen, wild yeast, pollution, bird droppings, what-have-you. The only processing is drying and freeze-storage. But maybe the same could be said for commercial grown hops. I...

What do you use to hold your mash temp?

I wrap furnace heat duct insulation (cheap at Lowe's-HomeDepot) around pot, double layer. Blanket on top. Only lose a few degrees in an hour.

    Can't open PET bottles

Am re-using PET soda bottles. Thoroughly rinsed and dipped in StarSan, then racked until filled with beer. Problem encountered is that the caps require excessive force to open, even having to use pliers a couple of times. What's with this? Is it carbonation pressure (doesn't seem higher...

    growing your own barley....

update on my progress.... Got an 1 oz Lacey barley seed packet from Sustainable Seed Co., grew it this spring, just finished harvesting it, got about one+ pound of good grain. I'll plant about half my garden with it next spring. Also got 5# of Robust seed from Fedco. The other half of the...

    Mt Hood hops stunted growth

I just dawned on me what you're doing wrong! You're drowning the plant - quit watering it. Roots need air too. Too much water will do just what's happening to your plant. I may be a few hundred miles west of you, but I know we've been having similar spring/summer weather. I haven't...

    Mt Hood hops stunted growth

I started Cascade, Mt Hood and a Golding this spring. Like you, the Cascade is doing great, looks nice, already reached 15+ ft, and covered with new cones setting on. The Mt Hood and Golding are about 1/3 size, compared to the Cascade, but healthy looking except for a few odd looking leaf, but...

Drying Fresh Picked Hops w/ Fridge

I've got to throw my experience in here..... Use of a refrigerator for drying is a good idea, you're just using it incorrectly. First, recognize, as a rule-of-thumb, that for each 10 degree rise in temperature, air will hold twice as much moisture (humidity). Just google lbs of water per cu...

Does anyone know any good books on distilling whisky?

oops, you were asking about books. Somewhere in that website there is a post or forum on books or other resource materrial. May take some searching.... Why ask a brewer when you can get the best info from shiners.

Does anyone know any good books on distilling whisky?

first....distilling for beverage is illegal, and the ATF is vicious. But, with the proper permit, one can distill for alcolol for other purposes. (yeah, I know you're from Scotland....just saying this for the benefit of others) great info on this website http://homedistiller.org/forum/...

    Boil in Pressure Cooker

I have a large 23-quart pressure cooker that I use regularly for boils. I don't place the lid on it during the boil. But I do place the lid on it, just loosely, when I move the pot to cold-crash cooling. The lid is on to prevent potential sloshing out of the hot wort if I stumble, and I keep...

AZ tap water: chloramine, chlorine, etc?

Call the water dept and ask them to send you a 'water quality' report. This will tell you how much/what chemicals are in your water - that's where you start. Then you can figure out what approach for filtering, treatment, etc. FYI - unless you have very refined taste buds, or uniquely...

    Moisture barrier in ferm chamber?

OK…I converted a upright freezer into a ‘fermentation’ chamber for curing homegrown tobacco. Purpose: to accelerate the aging process. It operates at 120-125°F and 70-75% relative humidity. Heat and humidity source is a CrockPot full of water, using the Ranco for control...

Maris Otter/Citra SMaSH (w/ homemade crystal)

If you malt your own grains, and the crystal comes from that same malt, why would it not be a SMaSH. It is still all from the same malt, technically, just a little different processing along the way. am not trying to hijack this thread, but I'd like a clarification, as I'm planning the same.
